Show First Title . . Union Wins Region 5 Football Championship Union High's first ' football team last Friday afternoon showed flashes of gridiron brilliance bril-liance as they took a 7-point ! lead early in the game and fought off a determined band of Utes from Vernal to win the ; Region 5 title, and the right to meet the winner of Region 2 in a quarter-final game on Nov. 16 or 17. It was one of those brilliant plays in the first quarter when Don Killian, on a quick opening play through the left side of i the line, found a hole large enough to drive a semi-trailer I truck through and ambled 19 j yards for a TD, and Arlys Iorg's drop-kick split the uprights, to give Union a lead they never relinquished, and the regional title during their first year as a school. Vernal took the opening kick-off kick-off and drove nearly 70 yards to Union's 15, where Coach El-don El-don Wright's lads stiffened and held the Utes for four downs to take over. Union was able to make a first down, but on the next three plays weren't able to make the necessary yardage and punted to Uintah's 35. It was here the first Union break of the game came. Huber intercepted intercept-ed one of Don Barr's passes, and the "Nameless" Union lads began be-gan to move with Lyle Snyder, John Benson and Don Killian taking turns in rolling up two first downs to set up the stage for Killian's 19-yard gallop, and the winning points. With a heavy, drenching rain making the day a miserable one jfor players, fans and officials, ! the remainder of the game was I played within the 35-yard lines, except for a touchdown drive j the Utes made in the third quarter. quar-ter. Some beautiful passing by Barr to Wilkins, was materially material-ly aided when Referee Vic Waite charged two 15-yard and one 5-yard 5-yard penalties against the Union team, and the Utes scored with wilkins taking a Barr pass on the 3-yard line and stepping over the line. Another pass, Barr to Wilkins, was knocked down by Norval Hansen, Union quarter, quar-ter, and the Utes failed in their conversion. Score, Union, 7, and Uintah, 6. Another particular spurt of football brilliance on the part I of Union came in the third quarter quar-ter when the Utes were smothered smoth-ered three times in a row for losses that amounted to 37 yards. Leading this attack was Elvin Rasmussen, speedy tackle, who twice broke through to smother Barr as he attempted to get off a pass, and another time when a Ute back attempted to run with the ball. It was some beautiful beau-tiful defensive work which this boy Rasmussen is capable of. Union will meet either either Cyprus at Magna, or South Sum-'mit Sum-'mit at Kamas the two teams that are now battling for the leadership of Region 2 on either eith-er Friday or Saturday Nov. 16 or 17. The winner of this playoff play-off will go into the semi-finals I for the class B title. ! On offense, the Union lads i easily outshone the Utes from running plays, but on passing Union just can't hold a candle to this big Don Barr, who is a great football player. Union still showed a decisive weakness on pass defense a weakness that has plagued them all season. sea-son. However, with such lads in the back field as Snyder, Benson, Ben-son, Hanson. Killian, Rasmussen and Scott Edrington in the line, opposition realizes they have been in a ball game. Score by Quarters: Union 7 0 0 07 Uintah 0 0 6 06 Touchdowns: Union, Killian; Uintah, Wilkins. PAT: Union, Iorg, dropkick. |
