Show Cougars Win Close Tilts From Alumni In Season's Basketball Opener; Leave On Pre-Season Hop To Sanpete Following a very successful alumni vs Union High (basketball (basket-ball game last Friday night, in which the Cougars won both ends of the double header, Coaches Glen Allred and Sar-kis Sar-kis Airslanian have announced their final cult, with twelve men left to make? up the squad. The Cougar squad will leave Friday morning1 for Sanpete Ooiunity where they will meet Manti on Friday and Moroni on Saiturday, in a couple of games that will give the mentors men-tors a much, , better idea 'of what they have to offer this year. The six remaining squad members from last year and six new kids will be wearing the Gold and Black of Union, and if the showing made last Friday night is any criteria, the Cougars will be plenty rugged. The only regular from last year not in uniform last Friday against the Alumni was Richard Rich-ard "Packy" Fenn, who was sidelined with a hip injury. Looking especially optent in the contests Friday night was Norman Hanson, who was very effective under the basket and on the boards, and also showed promise of developing a scoring scor-ing punch. Charles (Smiley) Denver Was the heavy scorer for the Cougars wiith 16, most of which were outside shots. Others who looked especially good were- Ruben Broderick, Snellon Johnson, Larry Ross, Ken Anderton and Kenneth Benson. Coach Allred divided his squad into two teams for the alumni contests and used all ' players in uniform, giving each plenty of opportunity to show his wares. Playing for the alumni alum-ni were several ex-Cougars from the last three years. Looking Look-ing especially good were John Perry, a regular on the Weber College squad at Ogden, who scored 14; Gordon ELdredge, currently a member of the BYU freshmlan team; Doyle Huiber. now attending the Weber College, Col-lege, and Byrell Lamb, who is a married man and engaged in farming at Bridgeland. He was high man in the alumni ranks, with 16 poiints. Elmer Bldredge managed the alumni teams with the scores being just about as close as possible. pos-sible. The first game ended 39-38. 39-38. and the second 5352, with the Cougars winning both games.
