A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served as an Army chaplain during the first world war. He taught speech at the University of Utah and for a while was dean of men there. In 1928 he was elected to the state senate, re-elected in 1932 and 1934 and became president of that body in 1935. After serving two terms as governor, he won his party's nomination for a third term in 1948 but was defeated in the final election by Gov. J. Bracken Lee. |
