Show Kenneth Hickell-Rates Top Spot On Deseret flews All-Star Team; iloughriders Played Fine Basketball Despite the 41-25 loss to Morgan Mor-gan Friday night, the Rough-riders Rough-riders rode into prominence in the annual Class "B" high school tournament, which is evidenced by the fact that Kenneth Nickell was chosen one of the six best guards in the state as he rated a place on the Deseret News' all-state third team, and Frank Snyder was given an honorable mention, as center. After losing an impressive 51-43 51-43 contest to Cedar City the opening day, the Riders came galloping back the second day to rope the Pirates from Cyprus high at Magna in the day's most thrilling game, and one of 1 the top contests of the tourney. The score was 49-48. It was Kenney's consistent play on offense and defense that ' caught the eyes of the sports writers and tournament officials as the Rider sophomore split the nets for 36 points during the three games. It is questionable i whether a better foul-shooting j record was made than the one I hung up by Kenny who sunk 20 ! of the 26 chances given him. .Against Morgan, Friday, the I smooth-playing soph was second i high scorer of the game without getting a single field goal he made 10 out of 12 fouls. Just another indication of how important im-portant Nickell was considered by the Morgan team. Those who saw the Riders play ball in the tournament were well pleased with the fine play of our kids. Each of the boys played fine . ball, with Franklin Peterson scoring 29 points in the three games, and Snyder hitting for 20. It was one of Scott Nickell's famous left-handed push shots and a foul pitch that spelled victory against Cyprus. . . . Then there was plenty of praise for Norval Hanson and John Benson, a couple of good little ball players who will be heard from in the future. Norval is a junior and John, like Ken Nickell. is a sophomore. Friday's ball game was probably prob-ably the last time a team will be playing in a Utah high school tournament under the name of Roosevelt Roughriders next year it will be Union high school and Alterra and Roosevelt Roos-evelt will revert to junior high schools. That provokes a problem prob-lem Will they be Spartans? Or will they be Roughriders? Time will answer that question. |
