Miss Carolyn Whiting, senior at Union High School, was declared de-clared the winner in the Uintah Basin annual "I Speak For Democracy" De-mocracy" contest sponsored nationally na-tionally b,y the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Vernal Jay-cees Jay-cees were sponsors of the local contest, assisted by the radio dealers and radio stations. Second in the contest was also won by a Union High student when Mis Mary Murphy was chosen as runner-up to Carolyn. Third went to Miss Mary Ann King of Uintah High at Vernal. I The recording of Carolyn's oration will be sent to Salt Lake City where it will be entered , in the state finals along with those from various other high schools. The state winner will ' ioin other state finalists in ! Washington where they will j compete for national honors. Not only the recorded oration will go to Washington, but the winner also will make the trip to the nation's capitol. Winning oratory contests is rather a habit for Carolyn last spring she won the declamation declama-tion contest sponsored by the seminary system of the L D S Church. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Whiting, of Neola. .
