Show New 1951 Mercury On Display At Snow Machinery Lincoln-Mercury dealers are displaying their new 1951 Mercury Mer-cury in their showrooms and have unveiled for public showing show-ing the automobile industry's newest automatic transmission the Merc-O-Matic. Combining a torque converter and three - speed transmission, the Merc-O-Matic provides the equivalent of a four-speed unit. It has a high degree of flexibility, flexi-bility, smooth acceleration, improved im-proved high gear performance, and a low axle ratio with resulting re-sulting lower engine speeds while cruising. The Merc-O-Matic will be one of three transmissions availible on the 1951 Mercury the oth-iers oth-iers being the standard transmission trans-mission and standard with Touch-O-Matic overdrive. Many striking styling and functional changes have beer made in the 1951 Mercury. A new grille and front end trim new rear fenders and quartei panels, new bumpers and an ex tra-large rear window are the principal exterior changes. The new 1951 Mercury grille has wider bars and a more mas sive appearance. The bumpei has been extended to provide wrap-around protection all the way to the wheel house, and is complemented by an extensior to the new grille parking lamp A new head lamp bezel and new name plate, placed on chrome strip just above the grille, complete the new froni end. Even more pronounced are the new rear fenders whicl have been changed completely extending in a bold sweep tc the extreme end of the car Large Combination tail ligh and directional signals, outlinec in chrome, are other changes ir the 1951 model. A huge rear picture window 29 per cent larger than in pre Vious models, gives added vis ion, with over 1,000 square inch es of unobstructed glass. Several important improve ments to the Mercury engine have resulted in an increase ii power, giving it a rating o: 112 hp. Among the engine re finements are a more accurate ly balanced crankshaft, selectivi fit of all main bearings, and i new camshaft which incorpor ates a new triple ramp on thi exhaust cam and a longer quiet ing ramp on the intake. The standard transmission i entirely new with a differen case and new gearing with i balanced tooth design. This lat ter feature will more than dou ble the life of the gear set.
