The first annual meeting of the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce Com-merce attracted nearly 150 members and guests on Saturday Satur-day night, which was held at the LDS Stake House in the form of a dinner-meeting. The featured speaker was Miles P; Romney, manager of the Metal Mining Association of Utah, who reminded the group that ' Utah has just begun to come into its own as an industrial area.- In the absence of President Gordon Harmston, the meeting was presided over and conducted conduct-ed by Cliff Memmott, vice president, presi-dent, who .reviewed briefly the organization of the Chamber of Commerce and listed a few of the things that must be done if it will continue. Reports were heard from the five committees that had been appointed by the president. Outlining the activities of their respective committees were Wesley R. Dickerson, chairman of the Agricultural ' UMi I..IIIHM II I.IIIJ and Conservation committee; Dwain Buchanan, Merchants' committee; Howard Harmston, Public and Business Affairs committee; com-mittee; Robert Montgomery, secretary, sec-retary, reported for the membership mem-bership committee as well as for the secretary. The other re--port was made by Paul Murphy, treasurer. Malor J. V. McLea of Roosevelt Roose-velt gave the welcome address and Mayors Henry Millecum of Vernal, Otto Johnsen of Duchesne, Du-chesne, and W. H. Linck of My-ton My-ton responded with brief remarks. re-marks. Frank Ward, executive secretary secre-tary of the ' Vernal Chamber briefly outlined the responsibilities responsibil-ities of the various committees, officers and directors of a chamber cham-ber and expressed optimism for the future of the Roosevelt group. He touched briefly on the need for cooperation if the Uintah Basin is to realize Echo Park and Split Mountain projects, pro-jects, which will be a great boon to the Basin and Utah as a whole. The speaker of the evening, Mr. Romney, who is a mining engineer, predicted that some day the oil shales that the Basin Ba-sin is rich in, will be used for the purpose the Creator intended. in-tended. He offered encouragement encourage-ment to the political and business busi-ness leaders of the Basin to foster projects that will develop devel-op the natural resources this great area is in possession of. Under the direction of Ben-nie Ben-nie Schmiett, a musical program was presented, consisting of two vocal solos by Esther Wogec, accompanied by Mrs. Schmiett, and two saxophone solos oy Garth Tietjen, accompanied by Ann Payne. The Roosevelt Second Ward Relief Society prepared and served the dinner, with E. J., Nixon, director and' ward bishop, bish-op, as chairman of the committee com-mittee in charge of the dinner. |
