Show THE BENCH FARMER YOURS FOR THE TAKING It sure done my old heart g'ood to see' the wonderful turnout turn-out at the UBIC. 'I'll bet it was as good a convention as has ever been held in the State of Utah. It seems to me every phase of the program was a big success. suc-cess. Have you ever seen a bigger big-ger or better parade in Roosevelt? Roose-velt? f It was the first fashion show I have ever been to. I' don't know anything about fashions, but I saw a lot of nice looking calves. . Say! Did you see that Gwen Wooley dance just before the fashion show. That would make any man sit up and take notice. I would like to of had a good seat like Tal Wardle, right up there on the stage. The UBIC slogan sure was adequate, Our Oil is a Source of Wealth, but Our Soil is Our Lasting Security. The Basin has many wonderful resources waiting wait-ing to be used. I am told that ithe UBIC committee in select- up with tents and all -ragalia. Tnis was under the direction of Paul Nelson and Grant Macj and was indeed a highlight of the celebration. Speakers Outstanding speakers were secured se-cured for each of the general assemblies, including Governor J. Bracken Lee, Douglas String-fellow, String-fellow, Senator Wallace . Bennett, Ben-nett, Dr. Thomas L. Martin. Dr. EIRoy Nelson, Ernest McCabe. and others. On Friday afternoon. Vernal furnished the program, under the chairmanship of Bryant H. Stringham. Prior to the program Ned Stringham entertained the group with various vocal imitations. imi-tations. Prize Winners Grand prize winners announced announc-ed at the dance Saturday night, which climaxed the affair, were as follows: refrigerator, Leonard Bateman, Roosevelt; Hoove-vacuum, Hoove-vacuum, Clinton Mickelson, Duchesne; Du-chesne; lamb, Laraine Dastrup, Altamont; pony, Donna Rae Hall, Leeton; calf, Ha Rae Mc-Conkie, Mc-Conkie, Roosevelt. The committee officers previously pre-viously named, and the advisory committee, including James Lewis, Forrest Hancock, Louis Jensen and Rulon Anderton, wish to thank everyone who cooperated and helped in any way with the successful celebration, cele-bration, and wish to thank "Aunt Hattie's" sound truck provided by Fisher Baking Company Com-pany through the courtesy of the Roosevelt grocery stores, which was on hand at all times to transmit the programs. ' ing their speakers carefully picked those who could help you to make use of the resources you have. The resources are here waiting wait-ing to be used, if only we would recognize and make use of them. If the UBIC has just left one improvement clear in your mind that will be of benefit to you, then the UBIC has been a success. i There are resources all around I you waiting to be grasped and brought ,to life. We fail to see what is around us in our own back yard. We are looking for a rainbow. Maybe what you want is in the acres of soil you have been farming Perhaps you have failed to bring that soil to life, making it respond to your touch, and it has become mediocre. medi-ocre. What if the resource you have overlooked is in your hobby What if your wrole slandard of living could be put on a higher level by doing the things you love to do best. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Maybe you have failed to notice no-tice your children. With a little encouragement your son or daughter might become an inventor, in-ventor, a doctor, a musician, or a leading citizen in your community. com-munity. Maybe the resource that would raise your scale of living is that of beautifying your home. If you have neglected this in the past, perhaps a cement walk, ' a coat of paint.- a new fence or some little improvement improve-ment on your place would be an inspiration to improve everything. every-thing. Most important of all, have you used the best potential resource re-source of all that which comes from your mind, from within yourself a desire to raise your standard of living; I remember when our floors were bare, our walls had no wallpaper; my wife carried water wa-ter from the ditch to scrub clothes on a washboard: we rodd to town on a wagon to buy kerosene for our lamp; our backhouse back-house wouldn't even meet WPA regulations. Not many years ago either. Can you remember? There is the oil resource. If you are lucky, you can have this without any effort on your part. But the big improvement in our Basin must come from the efforts of the people. We must work to improve our way of life; to bring to life and develop de-velop these resources we have for the taking.
