Show Duchesne Boy iates High lo Pentathlon Jimmy Grant of the Duchesne school last Saturday established himself as the third best young athlete in the intermountain west as youngsters from all over the western part of the nation met at South high school for the 15th annual Deseret News Junior Pentathlon grand cham- tended the meet, tollowin which the boys were firsts at the Skyline conference track jand field meet. Louis Hutchinsons, of Pan 'aca (Nev.) elementary school placed high, stacking up 4611 points; Arnold Sprague. of the .Overton (Nev.) school, placed second, with 4189.2 points and our own Jimmy Giant of the Duchesne school, placed third with 4146 points. This year's Pentathlon topped pre-war records with more tnan 200 schools, scouting groups ana boys' clubs participating. A to-;tal to-;tal of 13,000 took part in the ! various meets. . Jimmy won first place in the junior division at the meet held at Alterra two weeks ago; Dean Young, also of Duchesne, placed first in the senior division. Jimmy Jim-my is now the proud possessor of four beautiful trophies, having hav-ing taken first place in the Uintah Uin-tah district meet for three consecutive con-secutive years. Jimmy's rating was based on 'this average in the five events, as follows:- , 50 yard dash 7.0 seconds; high jump 4 ft. 10 in; basket-Iball basket-Iball accuracy goal throw 26 I goals within a two minute period; per-iod; broad jump 15 ft. 6 in.; ball put (5 pound shot) 41 ft. 9 in. Dean Young averaged the best time for the 75 yard dash witn his 9 second timing, senior class. Entries In the competition may be made by boys up to 16 j years of age. |
