Show Deer Count Shows Increase On Ashley Forest An air census of the Ashliy Forest district deer herd was made recently to determine the relative standing of the herd as compared with 'last year. Is an announcement made by Glen Lambert, forest ranger. Although the count was higher high-er than last. year, Mr. Lambert said losses this year were probably prob-ably above normal. The higher count this year could be accounted ac-counted for by the ideal counting count-ing conditions which existed when the Forest Service mads the check. During a hard winter, win-ter, the deer have little chance of separating and are still in I compact groups in the spring I when the count is made. Last year, a mild winter allowed the deer to scatter over a large ' area. Livestock men are reporting a great many deer dead in the mountains, most of them being last year's fawns which were still too young and frail to stand the rigors of such a winter. I It has been recommended by the local game department, the - bureau of land management, and the forest service, that there be no special deer hunt this year i in the Ashley Forest District. 1 Hunters will be able to kill , either sex during the regular hunt, though, as they did last year. A special hunt for deer in the Manila area is under considera tion and will n proved.
