Show Union Thin-Glads Win llegion Track, Field ftleet Union High School's Cougar track and field aces copped first place in eight of 16 events at the annual Uintah Basin Track and field meet, Thursday on the Union track to' win the tourney trophy. The Cougars edged the defending de-fending chapion Utes from Uintah, Uin-tah, IO712 to 88 2-3, in the final tabulation. Green - clad Rangely, Colorado, High school prep tracksters came in third with 68 2-3 points; Duchesne High drew 17x2, and freshmen from Roosevelt Junior High School made an impressive showing, taking home five points. Union's John Benson, diminutive dimin-utive basketball speedster, won enthusiastic applause afer he simultaneously won the 100-yard 100-yard and 440-yard dashes without with-out a breather between the two runs. Her negotiated the shorter dash in 10.4 seconds and the 440 in 55.7 seconds. - Bert Long, Rangely field ace, copped first in 'both the high jump (5' 9") and the broad jump (19' 11"). It was the first time the Colorado school had participated in the meet. In one of the longest contests of the day, Doyle Huber, of Union, finally won the pole vault at 10 ft 10 inches. Huber also took the 120-yard high hurdles, in 17 seconds. Union took the mile relay, but failed to place in the medley med-ley relay after being disqualified disquali-fied for cutting a corner. Rangely Range-ly took the 880-yard relay, final fin-al event of the day. Excellent weather, punctuated by only occasional guests of light winds, prevailed for the meet. A large crowd watched most of the meet, and scores were still on hand for the final event late in the day. Roosevelt Junior High placed in the broad jump and two relays. re-lays. The Utes' Doug and Neldon Slaugh starred in the javelin throw and mile run, respectively, respective-ly, and Merlin Richens and Lloyd Freestone added impressive impres-sive scores to the Uintah total.
