Show Ointahs, White Rivers Deny Curry Tribal Hon-Representation' Charge Bulletin Cruz Cesspooch, of the Uncompaghres, announced Thursday that members of his tribe are in agreement with the Uintahs and White-Rivers White-Rivers in their determination determina-tion to protest current con- -ditions on the Uintah-Ou-ray reservation. Members of the Uintah and White River bands of the Ute Indian tribe said Tuesday, in a letter addressed to the Tribal Business committee, that the Tribal Business committee of the Uintah - Ouray reservation does not represent the people of their bands. This action by spokesmen of the two bands followed a meeting meet-ing Sunday afternoon at White-rocks, White-rocks, where exceDtion was taken tak-en to a statement made last Friday Fri-day by Rex Curry, tribal business busi-ness committee chairman, who charged that a petition recently submitted to Governor J. Bracken Brack-en Lee by a delegation of Ute Indians was unauthorized, and did not represent the views of northern Utah Utes, nor give a true picture of conditions on the reservation. Signed by Julius Murray, a former Tribal business committee commit-tee chairman, and the officially designated spokesman for the Uintah and White River bands, the letter stated in part: "We want to know how you can take the view that you have on conditions among the (Indian) people. How can you say that everything a delegation of Utes told the Governor of Utah was not true, and that 145 of the Uintah and White River bands were liars, and did not represent the people? "We never see you or the men of your committee among us at anytime. You never come to our homes. How can you know what we have or have not in our homes, or what conditions con-ditions are among us. You are the ones that don't seem to know too much about the condition con-dition of the people. We have our men to take care of our business, and they are not in your committee. "You are just six men to us, who are trying- to deprive us of all tribal rights, and self-respect, which we are taking steps to correct immediately." In regard to the Wheeler-Howard Wheeler-Howard act of 1934, which the Utes maintain is bringing regimentation regi-mentation to the tribe and de- priving them of their individual rights as citizens, the letter continued: con-tinued: "If you want to fight to keep the Wheeler -Howard act, get out of the committee and do as we are; and quit spending our money to exercise your dictatorship dic-tatorship over people. Use your own car and your personal funds, as we have to do, to fight it. "We say that the Ute constitution- and by-laws, under the Wheeler-Howard act, is a mistake, mis-take, and will not work here on this reservation, and will cause more harm to be done. The author of the constitution and by-laws has admitted it was a mistake. Therefore, we intend to abolish it. Think what you may, but as far as the Uintahs and White Rivers are concerned and we believe the Uncom-paghre Uncom-paghre band is back of us our move to abolish it started with the meeting with Governor Lee. We say 'onward' until justice has been achieved for the Ute people of the Uintah and Ouray Ou-ray reservation." |
