Show Tribal Business Committee Requests Parley With Lee To Answer Critics A meeting with Governor J. Bracken Lee to offer him "correct "cor-rect and factual information as to the affairs of the Ute Indian people" was requested Friday at Ft. Duchesne by members of the Uintah-Ouray tribal business committee. Governor Lee, represented at the meeting by Carl Harris, was advised by Reginald Curry, tribal tri-bal business committee chairman, chair-man, that recently published accounts ac-counts on reservation conditions do not represent the views of the northern Utes of Utah. Committeemen asserted that Clifford Fretwell, who recently discussed reservation matters with Governor Lee, and at a governors' conference in Minnesota, Minne-sota, did so without the authorization author-ization of leading Indians of the reservation. (Editor's Note: Mr. Fretwell attended the Minneapolis meeting- at the request of Governor Lee.) Mr. Curry questioned Mr. Fretwell's understanding of reservation res-ervation affairs, and said "Mr. Fretwell had never approached the business committee . . .he. was little known on the reservation reserva-tion . . . (and) did not reflect beliefs of the Indian people." The meeting with the governor, govern-or, Curry said, was requested to gain a complete understanding understand-ing of interest the governor has expressed in Indian affairs, and to afford the tribe an opportunity opportun-ity to fully represent their views. An audience with Governor Lee was the first of four points in a resolution passed unanimously unani-mously by the tribal council. The others were: (2) To learn from the governor govern-or his interest in Indian affairs and the cause of his recent inquiries in-quiries and public announce- 1 ments. (3) To attempt to reach an understanding un-derstanding as to proper and authorized representation of our affairs through our selected representatives. rep-resentatives. (4) To learn from the governor govern-or his plans as to a program for Indian people, in which he might feel the Indian citizens of the state should cooperate. |
