Show Heber Church find Civic Leader Seeks Senate Post Harold H. Smith of Heber City is a candidate on the Republican ticket for the Utah State Senate from the Fifth Senatorial District which includes Duchesne and Wasatch Counties. In commenting on his candidacy candid-acy Mr. Smith said "I was not drafted to run for this office but the considerable number of people from these two counties who approached ap-proached me relative to seeking the office gave me some confidence confi-dence that I might render a valuable valu-able service. My continual personal per-sonal and business relationships with the agricultural, mining and tourist industries of our two counties coun-ties serve to make me aware of their needs. My long and' close association with the schools has given me a -keener insight into the administrative, financial and professional problems which they face. While I have made no pledges to any individuals or groups I am pledged to serve all of the citizens of this senatorial district and tthe State of Utah to the best of my ability." Mr. Smith is a graduate of B.Y. U. with his major study there being in Economics and Sociology.. He taught in the LDS Seminary at Vernal, Utah for four years before moving to Heber. He was principal for 11 years. Nine years ago he became identified with the Heber City Exchange Company as a director. Four years ago he left the church school system to become President and manager of the company. Active in civic affairs, Mr. Smith was one of the organizers and is a member of the Wasatch Chamber of Commerce. He served for several years as chairman of the. Heber Valley Airport Control Board. He has been president of the Heber Club, Zone chairman and Deputy District Governor of Lions International. While living in Vernal he served as a member of the boards for the Livestock Show and the Vernal Rodeo. He was a member of the Wasatch County Fair Board for four years and in 1947 was executive secretary sec-retary of the County Centenial Committee. He is now serving a second' term as President of the Wasatoh-Summit Knife and Fork Club. Mr. Smith is an active member of the LDS Church. He has served as Stake Sunday School Superintendent Super-intendent of Uintah and Wasatch Stakes. He is now Bishop of the Heber First Ward. With his wife, the former Mabel Nielsen, and their four children, Mr. Smith lives at 105 East Center Street in leber. |
