Show Indian Families Receive Elk Meat FORT DUCHESNE Nearly every family on the Uintah and Ouray reservation received allotments al-lotments from the 360 quarter portions of whole dressed elk, which were distributed recently, recent-ly, according to Francisco Cess-pooch, Cess-pooch, chairman of the Tribal Welfare division. Ten elk were g'iven to the Uintah Indian school. Rex Curry, business manager of the Tribal office, reported that the total "operations Elk" expense will amount to about $2500.00. Each quarter portion of elk averaged 75 pounds, representing rep-resenting approximately $82.50 worth of meat. Current price for elk meat is quoted at $1.10 per pound. The elk. were obtained from the Yellowstone National Park through the National Park Service. Ser-vice. Each year the Yellowstone Park makes its surplus elk available avail-able to Indian tribes. Every other oth-er year it disposes of its surplus sur-plus buffalo. Tribes requisitioning requisition-ing the surplus game are asked to pay for the expenses of killing, kill-ing, dressing and the transportation transporta-tion costs. |
