Show ; FARManaHOMEte By Louis A. Jensen County Agricultural Agent Alfalfa seed prospects are not ) as good this year as last. Con- siderable first crop seed has s suffered serious insect damage, 5 principally from grasshoppers, lygus bug and stink bug. Prosit Pros-it pects for the second crop appear brighter where insect control 8 has been practiced and sufficient 0 pollinators are present. Wild bee 8 populations seem to be increased n this year, which is giving a lot of benefit to seed growers, es-8 es-8 pecially on second crop. 8 Our annual UBIC last week was again an outstanding1 event. $ People of the Basin are fortun- a ate to have the opportunity of ffi hearing outstanding speakers 8 such as those participating in the general sessions and r departments. de-partments. j Congratulations to Elmer Yer-gensen Yer-gensen and his group of coworkers. co-workers. 1 With fall just ahead our thoughts turn to the Coun.y Fair. This promises to be an outstanding out-standing event. Dean Christen-sen, Christen-sen, chairman of the board, and his helpers are putting forth a lot of effort to make it a suc- , cess. The only way it can be a success is for the people of the i county to support it. This can , be done principally in two ways. I The first is to exhibit your 1 I crops, livestock, needle work, i canning, etc. Every person .in . ' the county has some outstanding thing which they have produced or made, and it should be exhibited. ex-hibited. The second way is to attend I the fair where you can view , i these exhibits and participate . 1 in the program of education I and entertainment. Why not i mark September 5 and .6 on your calendar and plan to be in Duchesne on those days. Numerous cases of heavy in-! in-! testations of grain weevil in I stored grain have been reported : to me recently. Some of thes3 1 are so serious that they have entirely consumed a large percentage per-centage of the grain in the bin. i With harvesting time for grain again at hand, it would be wise to take measures to protect 'stored grain from weevil dam- i ae- , I This can best be done by thoroughly cleaning and treating the grain bin before it is filled. Also some type of grain protectant protect-ant should be mixed with the grain as it is placed in the bin. This will insure the control of weevil for a long period of time. With the drought in the east and south and floods and dam-' dam-' aging storms this year, it is advisable ad-visable to prevent loss in all crops that are harvested. |
