Show "Uintah Basin Oil Discoveries Aid Utes," Lamp Magazine Article Says. . . The story of discovery of oil in Utah's Uintah Basin and what it will mean to the Ute Indian tribes there is told in an article in The Lamp, a magazine published by Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Titled "A New Day For the Utes, the article tells how the first oil well on the Ute reservation, Ute Tribal No. 1, was started in October, 1948, and came in in June, 1949. Ule Tribal No. 2 started producing in 1950. With the oil wells have come new problems for the oil men, however, as some of the Uintah Basin formations seem to be entirely different from those found in most oil areas. Transporting the oil is also a problem, because its high wax content causes it to congeal at temperature as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit. .. But the discovery of oil on the reservation has been a good thing for the Indians. In 1949 they received their first checks from the tribal treasury for the oil found beneath their soil, and the start on a new way of life. The article is illustrated with sketches of an Indian man, a woman, a boy, the village of Ouray and of the tribal business committee which runs the affairs of the Utes. |
