Show Region 5 To Get Chance For 3rd Team In Tourney During the past few years much discussion has gone by the board relative to Region No. 5 of the Utah High School Athletic Ath-letic Assn., qualifying a third team to participate in the Class B high school basketball tournament. tourna-ment. Latest action by the U. H. 5. A. A. indicates the efforts of all - concerned has not been in vain, because in 1953 they'll be given that chance. A bulletin has been received recently by Loman F. Hutchings, Union High School principal, listing the action of the board at their last meeting. At the close of the regular playing season sea-son in 1953 the second standing teams in the Uintah and Emery-Grand-San Juan divisions will meet in a playoff, to choose the third best team, the winner of which will travel to the home of the third best team, in Region 4. (Sanpete-Sevier), and the winner win-ner in this instance will enter the state tournament in Salt Lake City. Not every year will the Region Reg-ion 4 third team be the team the Region 5 third best team will play, because the second year it will De a Region 2 team; the third year one from Region 6, and the fourth year one from Region 3. Then the order will be repeated, unless a better method is devised by the U.H.S. A.A. A flip of a coin decided which team would travel in '53, and Region 5 will travel to Region Reg-ion 4. Thereafter, the order will' be alternated. i Some other interesting data was contained in the bulletin relative to redisricting the Class A set-up. It was pointed out there are several schools now in Class B who have grown to such i proportions" that they - belong in the A Class. However, the thinking think-ing of the board is such that the picture is expected to continue to change due to growth in some areas, and the proposed building of new high schools. When the shifts are made the enrollment in the 10th. 11th and 12th grades that equals 500 or, more will indicate the A schools, . and those under 500 will remain in the B class until they have! reached the 500 enrollment, then1 the change will be made. This will be delayed to allow the anticipated changes. Total enrollment in Region 5 which includes 12 schools from Uintah.. Duchesne, Carbon, Emery, Em-ery, Grand and San Juan Counties, Coun-ties, equals 1596. and includes Carbon with an enrollment of 514, the only A school in the group. This is the smallest enrollment en-rollment in any of the eight districts. Millard - Beaver - Dixie (Region No. 6) is the second to the lowest with 1785 enrolled in their 12 schools (all are Class B). ' Region No. 7, Salt Lake City schools, East, West and South, has the largest enrollment in the state with 5940. and Region No. 1 is second with 5842. Duchesne county has the smallest school in the state at Tabiona where only 27 students are registered in the high school .grades. North Rich with 30. and Marysville with 35 rate slightly ahead of Tabby. South in Salt Lake with 2170 is the big one and Ogden with 1941 is second. |
