Show Altcwah Mrs. Ethel Bb 90th Birthday Is Celebrated By Charles N. Shiner Altonah's oldest resident, Charles N. Shiner, celebrated his 90th birthday Saturday, December De-cember 15, at a family gathering at the home of his oldest granddaughter. grand-daughter. Leola Halley, in Pro-vo. Pro-vo. Mr. Shiner was born Dec. 11. 1861 in Buchawham, Tama Coun-ty. Coun-ty. Iowa, the son of George W. and Janett Leffler Shiner. He was next to the oldest of 13 children. chil-dren. In the spring of 1866, the family moved to Caldwell County Coun-ty Missouri. 2V2 miles north of the Old Hauns Mill, where so many Latter-Day Saints were thrown when they were driven from Missouri. When he was 10 years old, the family moved to 'Utah, settling in Mill Creek Canyon in the Salt Lake Valley, where he worked in the sawmill industry until he was 18, when he spent two years driving oxen in the timber logging operations. In 1881 his family moved down on the Sevier River to a place called Dover, near Gunnison. He married Maria Christina Jenson when he was 22. Later their marriage was solemnized in the Manti Temple. They lived in Freemont, Wayne County, where Mr. Shiner served in th-i bishopric for a short period and for two years as president of the Mutual Improvement As- crtnintirm Aftr 19 vago flia,, .......... . ....... i A J J W 1 , I. i J left Freemont and went to Cao-tle Cao-tle Dale, Emery County, where they lived for 12 years. In 1905 he moved his family to Altonah, where he has since resided. Mrs. Shiner died October 28, 1945, and in 1947 he married Martha E. W. Keystfn in the Manti Temple. Mr. Shiner has been a faithful worker in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all his life. In Altonah he was superintendent of the Sunday School for several years, and has held various other offices. At present he spends his winters in Salt Lake City, walking 0 blocks to and from the Temple Tem-ple to do work for the dead. His summers are spent in Al- tonah. where he devotes hi time to raising a garden. Eleven children were born to him and his wife. Maria Christina Chris-tina 7 sons and 4 daughters 7 of whom are living as follows: Mrs. Florence Seeley. Greenriv-er. Greenriv-er. Utah; Delbert Shiner. Altonah; Al-tonah; Mrs. Laura Barbon, Grand Junction, Colorado; Mrs. May Watterson. Altonah: Leslie Sihiner, Mrs. Ruby Nelson and Wilford Shiner, of Montana. He hag 28 grandchildren, 62 great - grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; a sister, Mr3. Beorgia Snow, lives at Castle Cas-tle Dale, and a brother. William Shiner, lives at Las Vegas. |
