Show Roosevelt Makes Ready For Year's Christmas Activities Santa Arrives Dec 16; Homes, Stores Asked To Enter Decoration Contest If the plans discussed Monday Mon-day night materialize, Roosevelt will have an outstanding Christmas Christ-mas program and the city itself will glitter and sparkle as only a group of decorated and lighted Christmas trees can add to the Yule appearance of a city, is an announcement made Tuesday by Rev. Charles Ray, who was selected as chairman of the 1950-51 community organization to succeed Harold Dillman. Representatives of the Roosevelt Roos-evelt L.D.S. Relief Society, the Baptist church, Kiwanis and Lions Li-ons clubs, Junior Chamber of Commerce, the elementary school and the city, laid plans to continue a program carried out in the past; made committee appointments, and selected new officers of the group. Assisting Rev. Ray will be John H. Blaine, vice-chairman; Mrs. Jessie Jes-sie Orser, secretary - treasurer; and Virginia Burton, assistant secretary-treasurer. Santa Claus will make his official visit to Roosevelt on Saturday, Dec. 16. The Kiwanis club, with J. D. Walker, president, presi-dent, as chairman of the committee, com-mittee, will be in charge of this activity. For the third year the combined com-bined Relief Society organizations-' of the two Roosevelt LDS wards will take over the gift bag assignment and will arrange for approximately 1000 bags of . candy, nuts, etc., to be distributed distribut-ed on Thursday, Dec. 21. at the elementary school. - Mr. Blaine will head a committee com-mittee and his elementary school faculty will assist in arranging ar-ranging for a program to be presented when Santa Claus will make his second appearance at the school gym to hand out gift bags to the kiddies 12 years of age and under on Dec. 21. A total of $70 will b awarded award-ed in six prizes this year for the best decorated homes and business establishments, and Ezra Ez-ra J. Nixon, manager of the J. C. Penney store and bishop of the Second ward, is chairman of the committee in charg of this phase of the program, He will be assisted by Rev. Ray, Father Alphonse A. LaMay, newly named Catholic priest here, and Bishop Randall Stewart Stew-art of the Roosevelt ward For the home and business house displaying the best exterior ex-terior design in keeping with the occasion, a prize of $20 each will be presented. Second and third prizes will be $10 and $5 .respectively, in both divisions. divi-sions. The above committee will be responsible for the judging which is slated to be done between be-tween Dec. 20 and 23. Robert Ferron and the. Junior Chamber of Commerce will as- -sume responsibility for street docorations and the large community com-munity Christmas tree that will grace the intersection of Main and Lagoon streets. A theme of small trees in front of each place of business is the thought that will be injected into in-to the decorative scheme for this year. Each individual merchant mer-chant will receive a tree and will be responsible for decorating decorat-ing it. Mayor Homer P. Edwards made a strong plea to the entire en-tire City of Roosevelt to respond re-spond to the call being1 made of them to assist in making this the best Christmas program ever carried out here. "If each merchant and home owner will assume individual responsibility responsibil-ity for the part he has been assigned, as-signed, we will achieve our goal," he said. |
