Show Television In Dark Ooom Uiolaies Visicn Prmc-ip!s Televsion in an unlighted room violates a basic principle of good vision, the Utah Optometric Association Asso-ciation said today in a statement issued for Save Your Vision Week which ended March 10. "The Television screen is about ten times as bright as a motion picture screen," Dr. Bagley, president, presi-dent, said. " This bright light tends to make the pupils of the eye contract. Darkness surrounding the set tends to make the pupils open. This conflict and constant readjustment causes fatigue." Rules for home lighting and television tele-vision recommended by the association asso-ciation are: Light the television room to about half the brightness needed for reading. Light the room evenly, as if it were "bathed in light." Especially avoid sharp contrast between the televsion screen and the area surrounding sur-rounding it. I Use opaque shades to prevent lamps from being brighter than the television screen. The lower edge of a shade should be at eye' level. Use indirect lamps with three-way three-way switches so lighting can be adjusted to reading or conversation conversa-tion as well as televsion. One lamp is needed for every 50 square feet of floor space. Place the lamps where reflections reflec-tions of light in the television screen can be avoided. A booklet on "Home' Lighting and Television" has just been published pub-lished by the association. |
