Show Your Health Is Important, Boctors Preach EDITOR'S NOTE: The Uintah Basin Medical Society is in the process of presenting a series of radio programs over station KJAM calling attention to the needs of "better health" measures. mea-sures. Following is an address delivired recently by Dr. Ray E. Spendlove, of Vernal . . . Other talks will be printed in the future in this paper: During the past weeks and through the coming weeks an immunization program is underway under-way both in Uintah and Duchesne Du-chesne counties. These programs were conceived in recognition that better health and life can be achieved through them. The focusing of the spotlight upon civilian defense has sparked a new enthusiasm and awakened a new sense of responsibility of protecting the home front from possible epidemics and disabling illnesses. Your health services are making mak-ing available on a mass scale immunizations against dipther-ia, dipther-ia, typhoid, whooping cough and small-pox. Other immunizations besides these are available at your physicians office. For example, ex-ample, it is now the opportune time to start immunization against Rocky Mt. spotted fever, and this is strongly urged for every man, woman and child above infancy in the Uintah Basin. The incidence in the Uintah Uin-tah Basin of Rocky Mt. spotted fever or, as it is better known, "tick-fever" is one of the highest in the nation. Now is the time to start your immunization against tick-fever. Immunization is also available at your physicians office against tetanus, or lockjaw. In time of war and national emergency the need for protecting against tetanus tet-anus takes on greater importance. impor-tance. Were not our soldiers all pre-immunized against lockjaw, thousands of our wounded men would die of this killer. We can maintain a high state of safety against typhoid outbreak out-break by having great numbers of our people immunized. This should have a booster shot every ev-ery year. Typhoid is not to be considered too lightly. There is at least one case in the Basin now. Most all of you can recall the epidemic of diptheria we had in 1947-48. There were more deaths in Uintah county than in all of the rest of Utah combined. com-bined. This need not be if all our people were to take advantage advan-tage of our immunization programs. pro-grams. Last spring dozens of our babies, ba-bies, children and a few adults were harrassed by whooping cough. Some of these children are still frail and ill as the result. re-sult. This, too, need not be if parents would have their children chil-dren protected. The Utah State Dept. of Health advocates starting start-ing on whooping cough immuni- I zation at the time your baby is one month old. Immunization only makes good sense and we consider ourselves our-selves smart people. Lets all prove we're smart by giving' ourselves a full measure of protection pro-tection against the common contagious con-tagious diseases smallpox, ty- 'phoid, tetanus, whooping cough, tick fever, (Signed) Ray E.
