Show Forester Lauds " Press & Eladio For Public Service j The press and radio in ths; Intermountain area performed an incalculable public service 'in 1952, said Regional Forester C. J. Olsen today. A summary of reports made by the national forests for a special campaign carried on during dur-ing the big game hunting seasoi showed that one hunter out of 2,400 was careless and started a forest fire. The Intermountain Region which has 20 national foiests in Utah, Nevada. Southern South-ern Idaho and Western Wyoming Wyom-ing had 105 forest fires started start-ed by hunters. To call the danger to the public's attention 40 radio stations sta-tions in the Region made 2,800 snot announcements; there were 350 fire prevention article hi local newspapers; and 175 sponsored spon-sored fire prevention advertisements advertise-ments by local businessmen and organizations. Noteworthy also was that even though Intermountain haz- i ards were considered as serious as those existing in Eastern States, only 2,000 acres of wild-lands wild-lands were burned. Mr. Olsen said that the intensive in-tensive campaign which the In termountain newspapers, radio, and television stations conducted throughout the serious fire season sea-son had made a major contribution contribu-tion to the national welfare and security. He pointed out that many acres of timberland. range forage, recreation and scenic values, plus wildlife had been saved through their major effort ef-fort to inform the public of ths extreme fire daneer. Man-caused fires in the Region Re-gion totalled 272 for the year. Thirty-four hundred acres of national na-tional forest lands were burned over. |
