An all-tournament team will be chosen by officials at the close of the three-day session, with each member receiving an appropriate award. The Roosevelt American Legion Le-gion sees action for the first time Thursday night, March 9, with a game against Kamas. Over the weekend, the Legionnaires Le-gionnaires kept drilling for the tournament against top - flight opposition, losing Saturday night to Oscar Carlson's Sporting Sport-ing Goods, of Provo, 55-40. The locals played Oscar Carlson's Carl-son's a close game most of the way; but a second quarter lapse, when the Provo team took an 11-point lead, spelled eventual defeat for the Legion. Tom Fullmer, Dick Owen, and Eldon Gardner caught fire for a quick 10 points as the third quarter opened, to put the Legion back into the thick of the flight; then Carlson's rebuilt re-built their shattered lead with 11 points by Whatcott, Harding, and Brown. From there on the Provo team was never headed. Score by quarters was 11-11, first quarter; 28-17, Oscar Carlson's, Carl-son's, second quarter; and 39-29, Oscar Carlson's, third quarter. Fullmer and Gardner were high-point men for the Legion, with 11 points each. Glenn All-red All-red had 7, Dick Owen, 6; Max Wilkins, 4; and Junior Moysh, 1. Chief troublemakers for Carlson's Carl-son's were Whatcott, 26 points, and Harding, 15. The former seldom missed from any part of the floor. Generally he capitalized cap-italized on unguarded seconds to make his field goals. |
