THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR SHOULD BE A TIME OF REFLECTION Today, January 1, marks the beginning of a new . journey through life for millions of people all over the world A voyage that will require 365 days to complete. Axe you ready to take up where you left off as 1952 came- to an end? , ' Did you achieve the goal set by you one year ago, as you looked forward with renewed hope and faith 'that f 1952 would bring peace to a troubled world, as well as to our own little world? : The Christmas just past provided a beautiful oppor tunity to praise God for the countless blessings He had poured out upon His children It was a time when we could rededicate ourselves to a plan of happiness and love taught nearly 2000 years ago by the Savior of all mankind, Jesus Christ. - It is truesthat at the very moment a cilivized world is aglow with bloodshed brought about because of a. people who have lost faith- in God and have shunned the teachings of the Savior . ; . Our young men are fighting and dying in far off Korea dying because they have faith in their God and in their nation a faith that is not accompanied by knowledge as to why the Korean war, but with the honj that intelligent people, who direct the poltitcs of the world, will one day regain the brotherhood of man that is so necessary if strife will come to an end. Never has a year brought into my life more rearons to praise God for blessings that are unmeasurable . . . I am just like every other individual, not every desire of s my heart was realized, but sufficient for my needs. The greatest gift 1952 brought into my life was the friendship of the fine people who make up the great Uintah Basin . . . Those of us who each week edit and publish the Roosevelt Standard and Uintah Basin Record appreciate the support and god will that has been so- abundant . . . You are the finest people in the world and deserve the - i best that can possibly come your way. 5. And now as we change our volume numbers and begin . f publishing your newspapers for 1953, we pledge our total ,' and unhesitating support in the many and varied projects ' that will be conceived during the days and weeks ahead. y That newspaper editor who can go through a year without trodding upon the toes of someone, just doesn't exist especially if h.r expresses his views- through an editorial column and I'm sure I fall into the former category, cat-egory, but believe me it was not done deliberately . . . I . have the attitude that a newspaper is a servant of the pople who subscribe to and read it, and when it fails to assume a progressive and forward attiude, . it is failing to meet its goal. As the staff of the two Duchesne County pewspapers begin plans to serve you in 1953, we do it with a fervent desire to make your newspapers the best possible. We have enough ego to believe that our papers rank among th best weeklies in the country, and will do all in our power to make them better in the future. Please accept a sincere wish for a Pleasant and Prosperous Year during 1953. v E v YE ED. SAYS: I have live with myself, and so I would be fit for myself to know. I want to be able' as days go by Always to look myself straight in. the eye. I don't want to stand in the setting sun, And hate myself for the things I've done. Author Unknown EXPERTS BEATING DEATH RAP 500.000 SAVED SINCE 1913 .... Death arid taxes may be inevitable but the experts are beating the former. Since 1913, the year Of the formal organization of the safety movement, about 500,000 persons have been saved from accidental deaths. Fram 1900 until 1913, an average of nearly 75,000 persons were killed in accidents each year a rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 population. The foil would have reached 84,000 persons in 1914 if this rate had continued, but it was reduced to 79 and the death toll to 77,000 a saving sav-ing of about 7,000 lives. Similar comparisons based on rates for succeeding years show that about half a million lives were saved by 1951. Despite these accomplishments, 'Accident Facts," the National Safety Council's statistical yearbook, just off the press, shows that one home in every five is touched by a serious accident each year. v E v The women folks should be able to understand this. Getting out a weekly newspaper is kinda like preparing a meal when you don't know what ingredients you are going to have, when they will arrive, or in what quantity. It also happens that after you have decided to substitute roast for fish, someone brings in a big mess that has to be used right now or else. Ellsworth( Kansas) Messenger.
