Show U. S. Smelting Offers Scholarships In Mining To High School Graduates; Utah, Colorado College Are Indicated Three scholarships in mining, geological and metallurgical engineering engi-neering are being offered by United Unit-ed States Smelting Refining and Mining Company to high school graduates again this year, Mr. O. A. Glaesser, vice-president and general manager of Western operations, op-erations, announced today. Each scholarship covers a four-year four-year course leading to a degree with payments at the rate of $500 per year and totaling $2,000 over the four year period. To the extent ex-tent that circumstances may per mit, scholarship recipients will be offered work during summer vacations va-cations at one of the company's plants. The scholarships are open to high school seniors graduating this spring and to high school prad-uates prad-uates who have completed their schooling since January 1, 1954, and will begin with the 1955 fall term. Sons of company employees who rank favorably with other candidates will be given preference. prefer-ence. The scholarships are in memory of three former officials of the Western operations of the company com-pany and except for several years j during World War II have been offered each year since 1939. Two of the scholarishps, the Downey Davidson Muir which is for study in metal mining or geological geo-logical engineering and the Walter Hazen Eardley for study in extractive ex-tractive metallurgical engineering are offered at the University of Utah. The Edward A. Hamilton scholarship schol-arship which offers a choice of metal mining, geological, or ex tractive metallurgical engineering is being offered for study at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, this year. Mr. Glaeser also announced that in addition to the above scholarships scholar-ships the company is offering a special one-year $750 scholarship at the University of Utah to a college col-lege senior or graduate student in the mining, geology, or non-ferrous metallurgy field. The recipient recip-ient of this scholarship would do certain investigative work considered consid-ered of value to the company.
