Show Union Upsets Moai) For 7-0 Win; Meets Utes Friday That unnamed Union High football team last Friday put on a brilliant display of grid power to upset a highly favored Mo3b eleven from deep in the heart of Grand county, and thus establish es-tablish themselves as one of the top Class B teams in the state. Lead by a charging line and flanked by a secondary defense, the Union lads stopped the Moab offense that the week before had rolled to a 25-7 victory over Uintah High from Vernal. Not only did their defense shine, but with John Benson, Don Killian, Lyle Snyder and Norval Hansen alternating on offense, the Union Un-ion team knocked on the goal line all through the first half; but had to wait until the third quarter to really upset the dope bucket by pushing oyer a TD and converting for those seven precious points and a defeat of last year's Utah class B semi-finalists. semi-finalists. Union took over the ball early in the third quarter, and with Benson reeling off a beautiful 30-yard run, ably assisted by Fullback Killian, who plunged for- 10 yards and then knifed over from the six for the score, climaxed a fine performance of offensive and defensive skill as they made the only score o the game, and won their first game of the season against a single loss to Pleasant Grove two weeks previous. - Coaches ,Eldon Wright and Glen AJlred have moulded together to-gether fragments of last year's Alterra and Roosevelt teams into a fine aggregation that should be considered among the top teams of the state in. Class B competition. The line is big, fast and performs credibly on defense and offense. Their back-field back-field is deep with defensive power pow-er and skill on offense. The only weakness that is. apparent is in the passing department, which is more evident with the loss of Kenny Nickell whose broken arm removes him from all football foot-ball activity. It was he who looked especially good as a passer pass-er in the PG game. Friday at 1 o'clock, Union moves to Vernal to engage the Utes in the second league contest con-test for each team, with Moab bye. The following Wednesday at the same time, Moab will go to Vernal and Union misses a league game, but might have a practice contest. The score by quarters: Moab 0 0 0 00 Union 0 0 7 07 |
