Show diodel strawberry lied the last week in november 1896 I 1 planted what I 1 call a model strawberry bed writes F P W corliss in strawberry the ground was carefully plowed in october turning in two loads ot of well rotted stable manure then letl left to remais a month then harrowed down smooth when two more loads ot of well pulverized manure were vere carefully scattered over it and well ivell plowed in I 1 then harrowed it down smooth and firm arid and marked off my rows tor for planting tour four feet fee t apart instead ot of cutting a trench with my plow I 1 threw two furrows together forming a ridge sixteen inches wide I 1 raked these ridges with a steel garden rake until they were as fine and mellow as ae ashes then taking a gar gaiden den hoe I 1 cut a drill three inches deep in the center of 0 each ridge and filled nearly full with pulverized manure and wood ashes then scattering a little fl ine nemoia mold over this fornal forming ng a center ridge which I 1 converted into little cones with naked hands making a perfect bed tor for the roots ot of the plants my rows were tour four feet apart and I 1 set my iny plants twelve inches apart la in the row this spring I 1 plowed small furrows to the rows thus i giving each row a bed thirty inches wide and today july 1st ast these thirty 1 I inch beds are nearly covered with new and nicely growing plants As tast fast as they reach the proper limit 24 inches I 1 cut the runners back with a sharp hoe ice it could not be any prettier eniar cmar ked a gentleman while looking at lit it this week arid and he knew wherefore he spoke having been born and reared on the eastern shore ono one of 0 the finest belts on earth tho the size of my bed from the center of the furrow they hey call them water furrows here bere la 19 HO feet by 20 leet feet and the bed proper propel ls Is IG 16 feet by feet |
