Taking Political Sides d TODAY somewhoentirely is snuggled up close to the throne or hopes soon to be, proclaims: Landon is as synthetic as a rubber duck. Roosevelt is the only hope of an imperiled people. What price a constitution when we can have frankfurters?" Tomorrow another gentleman, who likewise is as unbiased as a spitefence, bursts forth with something like this: Roosevelt and your is wrecked. Lanforever country don alone can save our threatened institutions. fair-min- Re-ele- ct The Two Opposing Camps THE Republican side there ONtemporarily is a lull. Incredible though it sounds, Col. Theodore ' Roosevelt, Jr., is not getting ready to run for anything. Later reports may change this. Organizing the speaking bureau ror the Democrats, Chairman Rayburn does not list among the chosen orators the. nr. ne of his most distinguished fellow Texan. In vaudeville it breeds a laugh when the second half of the sketch makes the wrong answers, but politics is something else again. Can it be that Uncle Jack Gamer has become the Gracie Allen of his sex? Only they do let Gracie talk! A writer who isnt taking sides wonders at length whether the qualihomespun suspender-wearin- g ties of Gov. Landon can overbalance the melodious and limpid lines of President Roosevelt. IRVIN S. The operators worked the largest horses and mules and averaged the greatest number of days of work a head In a year, yet they cheapened their horse cost by using less grain and more pasture, legume hay, straw and cornstalks. They turned their work stock out on pasture at night and on idle days In summer, and in winter used legume hay to balance stalk fields and straw stacks to make satisfactory maintenance for horses. In farms studied In the survey, average amounts fed to a work horse a year were about 3,200 pounds of grain, mostly corn and oats, and 5,000 pounds of dry roughage, including considerable straw and corn stover. In addition the horses grazed about six months on grass and stalk fields. Green Strip Plan Halts Loss of Valuable Soil Some crops are enemies of soil erosion and other crops are allies. Some crops protect and bind the soil and others Induce soil losses. According to the Soil Conservation Service nearly all forage crops such as alfalfa, the clovers, Sudan grass, and lespedeza check soil washing and blowing much more effectively than such cash crops as corn, cotton, tobacco and potatoes. The Soil Conservation Service is recommending strip cropping to thousands in Its 141 demof farmers onstration areas throughout the country. Strip cropping means planting strips of crops on the contour between strips of crops. clean-cultivate- d, Each close-growin- strip checks the g speed of water running down the slope. These are treasured throughout the years, and may include some special kindness shown, some hospitality extended, some word of encouragement spoken at the psychological moment. A recommended book, an appreciative note may have given to us lasting pleasure and inspiration. It is decidedly ungrateful to accept so much without giving all we can! So let us take time to consider how many beautiful memories we are creating for others. Are we prompt in writing the letter which will bring happiness and comfort to some one waiting to hear? Are we dropping cards or roses or gifts to our friends on ordinary as well as special days? Beautiful memories are easy to live with; so let us cherish those we have and deliberately go out of our way to provide many for others. R. E. C. RJEWIHI.ILJE HKID'H'EE Mrs. J. H. Strip cropping also is effective in retarding wind erosion. crops break the wind, and in addition help build up fertility and conserve moisture in the soil. Close-growin- g LaMK' ol Two Tons of Roots Alfalfa improves soil conditions very rapidly because of its huge root system which penetrates much more deeply than any other legume. Alfalfa roots remaining in the soil increase the humus content and add supplies of nitrogen and other plant foods. The roots seem to improve the physical properties of the soil. This improvement is particularly noticeable on heavy soil. The penetration of the roots into the subsoil permits the entrance of air and water; Dr. C. J. Willard of the Ohio State university found that the average weight of alfalfa roots per acre in six field tests was two tons. A good crop of alfalfa will leave 125 pounds of nitrogen, 25 pounds of phosphoric acid and 40 pounds of potash in the soil. This is about twice the amount of plant nutrients that are contained in a ton of ordinary fertilizer. It is twice as much plant food as red or Alsike clover leaves in the soil and ten times as much as is deposited in the soil by a crop of soy beans.
