Grape vines are usually planted six to eight feet apart The grape thrive well In a variety of soils provided the heavier loams giving best results as a rule, says the Montreal Herald. One or two year old plants are used In planting and are usually trained to a two wired fence, one wire 18 inches from the ground and the other four feet The young plants are cut back to two or three buds at planting time and as these develop the strongest one Is retained and the others removed. The growth from this bud is allowed to grow its full length. At pruning time the second year this growth Is also cut hack as before on the previous years growth and again the strongest growth is retained and allowed to develop as id the first year. At pruning time the third season this cane Is cut back at the top of the fence. As growth commences select the strongest near the wires, removing the others, thus the ones retained will form the of the vine. future frame-woo- there is good drainage, d Use Manure for Orchards , Where stable manure Is available, it should be used for the orchard as much as possible this winter says A. E. Murneck of the Missouri College of Agriculture. Manure will not only add nitrogen but will also improve the water-holdin- g capacity .of the soil. A fair application for apple trees of average size is 200 to 250 pounds to a tree, depending on the fertility of the Soil and vigor of the trees. The use of a fair amount of commercial nitrogenous fertilizer, followed by a moderate dressing with manure and a certain amoufit . of pruning of the trees, may be considered a desirable combination of practices to put vigor into many of our devitalized orchards.' Ani- remedies to rid their disease, which includes such ailments as range paralysis, big liver disease, white eye, neuritis and leucemia, is likely to prove a waste of money for poultrymen. As yet there is no known cure for the malady. Although comparatively new in this state, leucosis fs apparently spreading throughout many flocks and threatens to become a serious poultry problem. All breeds of chickens appear to be susceptible to the disease. It affects both sexes alike and usually occurs between the ages of three and twelve months. In spite of the fact that birds contracting leucosis cannot be cured, research investigations indicate that the disease can be controlled if poultrymen will carry out five more or less preventive measures, it Is said. These Include rigid culling to detect leucosis in the early stages of the disease, disposing of all diseased birds by killing and burning, buying hatching eggs, new breeding stock or baby chicks only from disease-fre- e flocks and by following strict hygiene and sanitary practices. Should a poultryman believe that his flock may be Infected with leucosis, immediate diagnosis, can be made by a local veterinarian. Symptoms of the disease are variable and depend largely upon the tissues affected. When the organs are involved, general weakness and varying degrees of anemia and diarrhea are common symptoms The birds are likely to become poor in flesh. Where the nerve type of disease is present, the chickens may become lame in one or both legs and the wings Buying legumes. Grape Vines Prosper in Various Kinds of Soil Money Spent on Remedies Is Not Good Judgment. flocks of leucosis Pride in straight rows will cost farmers inestimable losses this winter in the form of soil erosion on sloping fields that have been plowed up and down the slope. Contour plowing and cultivating will stop most of this loss. Plowing and cultivating up and down the slope makes for straight rows of corn and other crops, but it also speeds water and may up the flow of run-ol- f start serious gullying. WNU Service. By Ralph C. Hay, Agricultural Engineering Department, University of Illinois. WNU Service. . , Contour cultivation Is so called because It parallels the terraces in long, winding furrows. The corn must be drilled instead of planted in check rows, but this Is quite advantageous because more soil and soil moisture are conserved as a result of the run-ol- f water being retarted by each corn row. Farmers who practice contour cultivation report that It increases crop yields, and but little more time is required than by farming In straight rows. Working the curved rows which are longer than the field compensates for the. cultivation of the few pointed rows between' the terraces. Drilling corn has proved satisfactory where tried In Illinois, particularly 1 a rotary hoe is used for the first cultivation, and less lime and trouble are corn. required than for Furthermore, farm work done on rows running practically level requires less power to pull the machinery than where the Implements must be drawn up and down the slopes. Farming In straight rows over terraces, especially on steep slopes, Is also objectionable. There may be trouble in getting the machinery over the ridges, and furthermore, the ridges may be torn down so that considerable work has to be done to keep the terraces from breaking over duriDg heavy rains. dance, or an dinner engagement, this lovely afternoon dress would be perfect. If there is a flaw In the turkey breeders make-usays a writer in the Missouri Farmer, it Is his fancy to fine feathers rainbow tails and spots are common words In his vocabulary. And while It Is true one might as well feed beautiful plumage as well as gray and chocolate colored tails, good color is much less important in breeding stock than vigor; for without vigor in the breeding stock the breeder is headed for the rocks. One thing to bear in mind, however, is the fact that good color in a turkey is evidence that her ancestors have had the attention of a good breeder and that vigor is more likely to be present than in a bird of poor coloring. wiefaftB, Kem.; Chleavo, Hl.r Los Aagplea, CdU.j FhUadPtohia, Po.; Tomato, Ontario, Cauda Dpt.WUl28.
