The collection consists of thirty nests found in the Bear river marshes, on Bird island and in the Jordan river sloughs. With the object of .MORGAN organizing the growers of Morgan county in such a manner that they will be able to operate through the federal farm board, fruit and vegetable producers of the county met at the court house in Morgan. SALT LAKE . thirty-tw- o , If registered seed had no other value than to stop the spread of noxious weed seeds, all the money and effort ever expended to develop pure seed would be Justified, declares T. G. Stewart,1 extension agronomist at the Colorado Agricultural college. Probably more weed seeds are spread through crop seeds than in any other way, Mr. Stewart says. Registered seeds of the standard Colorado varieties can readily be obtained by any farmer. Such seed, when planted, produces good yields of high' quality crops. Carelessly selected seed often produces a mixed crop that is unprofitable for both the grower and the buyer. Mixed wheat, for instance, is severely penalized, especially when red and white wheats are mixed. Mixture of Grain Types. A mixture of different types of grain not only brings a lower price on the market, but prevents harvesting at the right time because of the different ripening periods. More farmers every year are appreciating the importance of selecting and planting clean seed, whether their crop is to be sold as seed or sold on the market for commercial use. The variety or type of seed selected and planted depends upon the market demands as well as its adaptability to a locality. Rotation of crops as well as clean seed is a big factor in keeping a field clear of noxious weeds and in preventing grain mixtures. Registered seed planted on a clean field will produce good seed for the next year and, with correct rotation, the crop will produce good seed for at least four years. It is advisable to purchase new seed at any time a mixture of seed or noxious weed seeds appear in the supply. Test for Germination. The Colorado seed laboratory at the college is equipped to handle seed samples for germination and purity tests. No charge is made for the first five samples submitted by farmers, and only small charges are made for additional samples. The state seed registration service at the college, which is under the supervision of Mr. Stewart, provides for field inspections and grain registration In all parts of the state in order to make good seed available to Colorado farmers. County extension agents are able to furnish names of those who grow registered seed. . , i , ' Feen-a-mi- Satisfactory to Fowls Test work at several stations as well as practical experience indicate that there is no added virtue In making the laying flock scratch in the litter for the grain fed them in the afternoon or evening. Feeding this grain whether it be straight yellow corn or a mixture of two or three grains in troughs or feeders is to be recommended. Commonly some dirt or filth will stick to grain dropped In litter and make It more or less' unpalatable. As to the exercise that hens get in scratching in the litter: if the hens are healthy, fed a good ration and the house is warm and dry they will scratch whether grain is put in the litter for bait or no. Agricultural Hints Lettuce will often volunteer from seed scattered about the year before. Experiments Indicate that the paper mulch about pays for itself in the eastern states. Bullen of Richmond, one of Cache countys representatives in the state legislature, who is attending the special tax revision session, has received word that a cow in his herd at Richmond has made a record, in Cache county tests, which probably has not been equaled in Utah. The cow produced 122.3 pounds of butterfat in 30 days. A bumper sugar beet PRICE crop is expected in Carbon county this year, due chiefly to the severe winter, which resulted in the destruction of pests. The senate has been rapid in its progress having passed S. J. R. 3, creating the tax commission; S. J. R. 2, providing classification of property; a bill appropriating $20,000 for the cap-itgrounds; another providing $50-00- 0 gas tax money to be used to pave the roads around the capitol ; the bank resolution is on third reading; the Ryan plan to drop the multiple system of mine taxation has been defeated; the senate is considering the McCarthy proposal to let the tax commission handle mines as the utilities commision handles utilities. Should the house committee plans carry in the house, the senate and house will differ on some points. The principal difference being in the matter of mine taxation. After much discussion the senate finally wrote a provision into S. J. R. No. 2 that the mine multiple of three could not be changed for six years. Members of the house have declared that the mine 'problem will be kept out of the house bill and if it gets before the people at all it will be as a separate amendment and must stand or drop on its merits. Rep. Critchlow introduced a proposal to tack mine taxation onto H. J. R. No. 1, the clasification measure as a rider but lost. It is likely that the subject will be brought up again. It a last resort the multiple adherents may endeavor to get the six year delay clause written in the house bill. A strong onslaught on the offset provision is to be looked for in the house. The senate has declared that the legislature must provide offsets or deductions. This means that a part of the property tax will be applied on the income tax in eases where the taxpayer has to pay both. The amount of offset is left up to the legislature. The tax commission and its expert, Dr. Lutz, has asserted that offsets will kill the income tax plan in actual really is just about the richest, mellow est, mildest blend of choice Burleys ever smoked. youve How to Take Care of Your Pipe IHist No. 2) When breaking in new pipe, smoke your first few pipefuls slowly. The senate is sure it wants offsets and the house has not yet acted upon the question. The senate has evaded the matter of limits on income taxes. The house committee wants the limit on personal income taxes placed at C per cent and the business excise at-- per cent. This is a question on which an agreement between the house and senate will have to be reached. The senate killed the plan, which would have meant that a vote of the legislature would be needed to change tax rates. The house and senate will have to agree on the wording of the amendments to the state constitution. The legislature also has before it the following questions: Amendment of the state building program to allow the use of inmate labor on building projects at state institutions. To provide an additional $175,000 for a building at the mental hospital. To authorize a separate building at the mental hospital instead of au addition to the main building. To authorize a gymnasium at the industrial school instead of an additional building and hospital. The memorial urging Congress to amend the federal bank tax act. The memorial urging Congress to provide federal aid for old age pensions. . The proposals for classification of property and creation of the state tax commission are the only two fundamental changes in the organic law recommended by the tax commission and their passage was the purpose for calling the special session. The near future will have to see the passage of these measures and if the senate refuses to accept the amendments made in the house on the property classification, the working out ot a basis of agreement will have to be arranged. Considerable interest is centered on H. J. R. No. 7, by Rep. Chas. Redd of Ran Juan county, which proposes to amend the constitution to read: All metalliferous mines or mining claims, both placer and rock, shall be assessed at full value by thetax commission as provided by law. tobiljg; slr ljmP a Dies f ' Although I am only 22 years old, I have four babies to care for.
