McAlpine. ' (Taken from Grit) : for want of building and equipment. In the ordinary subjects, requiring only book learning, we should be just as efficient as the moie favored districts, but it is in the more special fields of 'vocational training and ' the sciences requiring laboratory work that we are woefully lacking. In neither of our high schools is there a science laboratory. How can our students compare successfully in the sciences with others if they are deprived of the important laboratory work so essential to an understanding of these courses? In neither of our schools can you find a shop building or adequate equipment for the. teaching of shop or vocational training. Why shouldnt our boys have the advantage of training in such courses as Fa "in Mechanics, Automobile Mechanics, Metal Work, and Woodwork? Can we afford to neglect entirely this practical vocational training and stress only the abstract and theoretical? Of course it cannot be" contended that none of the schooling we are now giving is practical. We are striving to make it as practical and useable as train possible, but it is still a ing, woefully lacking on the side' of the vocational courses. Especially is this true of the boys. For years our girls bav bad courses in cooking and sew-- , ing, but our boys have been neglected because we have neither bqihling space nor equipment to teach success-boj- s fully the courses named above, .r We , , - Supt. of Schools Rich County, Utah SAoq AND PUNISHMENT to themselves. The foregoing remarks have dealt principally with the high schools, but all of our difficulties are not centered in the high school. In some parts of the county,, we have elementary school buildings which are far from being satisfactory place for our children to spend a large portion of the day.
