Show seek to reduce cost of ir honey T losses and gains shown to be closely related to colony yields prepared by the united states state department of agriculture beekeeping practices and management as well as the marketing of honey have been stu studied alet during the past year by the bureau of entomology find and agricultural economics of the united states department of agriculture with a view to formulating meth that will help the beekeeper pro duce honey at a profit A preliminary report of the survey 01 of f apiary practices in the inter moun wn region utah colorado montana wyoming and idaho idabo covering the data secured in 1923 9 will soon be ready for distribution A similar study will be started this year in the clover honey homey producing region and both studies will be continued until sufficient data have been obtained to warrant arrant advice being given oc practices rind management in beekeeping as well as regarding honey houses and equipment that have been found to be efficient and profitable beekeeper beekeepers Bee keepen keepers keep records beekeepers Bee keepers operating cooperating co with the department in these surveys keep dally daily records of labor and expenses make invoices and report on the management practiced under a variety of conditions this information will be of interest to all beekeepers bee keepers who de tire to compare their management practices with those of other bee keepers forty apiaries were included in the 1928 survey ranging in ID size from to colonies and covering a total of more than colonies the results of this curvey according to E L sechrist of the bureau of entomology tom and H R B E kifer of the bureau of agricultural economics show that the great variance in labor and investment costs as well as the yield per colony have a marked influence on the keepers beekeepers bee crofts co cc operation necessary such investigations cannot be aled out successfully without the active operation cooperation co of the various state agricultural extension agen agencies cles the bee press beekeepers bee keepers organizations and particularly the bee beekeepers keepers themselves all these have done excellent work in the past and help given by them in pers onel contact has been of great value the bureaus say the work undertaken in the blovet region this fall wll will depend to a con degree on the assistance and operation cooperation co of local beekeeping specialists cia lists and beekeeping organizations any organization able to assist in these surveys is invited to communicate with the division of bee culture investigations bureau of entomology united states department of agriculture washington |
