An estimate has been made of the cost of, paving the state road from the Jordan Narrows to the Utah-Juacounty line, a distance of fifty miles. According to the estimate a strip fifteen feet wide can be paved for 5500,-900- , or at a cost of 59,676.50 a mile. H. W. Wistner, trainmaster of the Salt Lake division of the Southern Pacific, is in the Ogden hospital recovering from injuries sustained Monday west of Ogden, when the gasoline speeder upon which he was making in inspection trip was derailed. He suffered a broken collarbone and cuts md bruises. Frank Philbrook, charged with mur-dein the first degree in connection with the death of Pat Quigley, a miner, declared to have been poisoned in an Ogden rooming house, will be placed on trial on April 10. Board of county commissioners and township supervisors are giving the matter thoughtful attention and improvement will undoubtedly be rapid from now on. The federal government is offering every assistance to the forward movement. Object-lessoroads are constructed upon application of township or county authorities to demonstrate proper methods of construction and proper use of roadbuilding materials. The office of public roads and rural engineering of the department of agriculture furnishes the services of an engineer, and the local communities are required to furnish all the material, labor and supplies. Experimental roads are also constructed to determine the relative merits and values of the various types of road construction, and of the various preparations and materials for use In road construction. In certain instances the office pays only a portion of the cost of these roads and the balance is borne by the county in which the road is located.
