richfield have claimed a certain measure of praise pr nse for the c tys educational institutions and kneir loyalty to education coeducation but the attendance it the commencement ommen cement ex e freises of the high school last friday frida was mas certainly taini N not an all evidence eil dence of either inte interest iest or ampre appreciation bation of educational work fhe tabei tabernacle nacle presented a deserted appearance when the hour fol foi the opening of tile the e excises was reached there w was as an appreciable lack of attendance on the part of the orients of the students and teachers in the grades con apic lous ious b their absence even superintendent nelson could not avoid reference to the slim attendance and T his opening remarks were in the nature of a rebuke to the lations of tho the public school system for such indifference to the closing of the school tor for the yeal the high school band v was as on the street about 9 30 and the boys discoursed splendid music calling attention to the exercises the boys h hie i e been working but a couple of months but they rendered music which was credit to their teacher mr air wilcox the program did not commence com until nearly an hour after the time set et for beginning but once started it nas as a good program and every number was a gem the opening was as a song by the class and the yen ren alered a oeal ocal ive ve tire of songs of the south entitled in the land of cotton wh h d excerpt front 1 I 1 rl D tile the famous i songs of paa generations this was so well done that superintendent nelson asked that it be repeated as soon as bishop heber christensen had fad offered the intoci tion ray cowie V delivered deli vered he salutatory of oc the class and his address nas as short and to the point frank wilcox then rendered a bolin old hayans Hayd ns bonito which was bealli a piano and violin duatt and mrs cillaway Cilla as well as mr wilcox gaye gae a pretty rendering of this beautiful number superintendent super i it I 1 nelson was intro deuced to address the students ile he commenced by commenting on the small attendance and suggested that it was a reflection on the loyalty ot the of richfield that there was not a larger attendance at the exercises he then commenced his address to the students he stated he had bad four of the requisites of success in mind to talk of he represented those by bv the letters R E P S the first requisite was restraint th the students had learned bom something ething of this in their work the past year they had found that it was necessary that they exercise restraint in the matter of amusements in order to be pre ared with their class work next da there is no success in life without restraint declared spat nelson the next of the essentials for success was effort without this there could be no progression effort is one of the greatest necessities for the student and by effort only could success b be achieved purpose was then given as another essential of success A man or woman must have a purpose in view it has ha been said that the world stands aside for the man mail with a P purpose who knows knovs where he it is going M mr r nelson urged every one of the grad to have a purpose in life and to pursue tint thit purpose with push and peri persistence the last laet of the requisites for success was service he urged thit th it the graduates should pursue a purpose in life thit that they might be of service to their city county state or country ile he quoted freely from the lives of mch men who had bad become great from their jensen was in the nature ot a class prophecy and he successfully wound all the class members into it tit in a humorous manner which was entertaining and called forth vigorous a applause r the classes were then summoned to the sta stand nd where H N hayes awarded the certificates in a few well chosen words fe after singming ng america the benediction vias as pronounced by W 11 robinson each number upon a banquet table in richfield the farnsworth cafe company the cateress caterers cater ers and hernan hern an andelin had chadee of the details ile he had eng aged 0 number of excellent waitresses and the viands were here placed batore ane gilt ats in fit tempting array the foll following is the menu served sered fruits bre id butter cold meats pickles olies lemon pie raisin pie ice cream cake punch writer Nal walnuts nuts mints miss clara hosmer the able junior dembei of the high school faculty presided at the banquet and she introduced the speakers with appropriate quips and stories the old glory waves the chorus of each song was rendered with vigor by the class von Clin appeared as ae an indian maid in full foil indian costume and mike make up djie myrtle had a band um uniform which set her contribution off nicely while flora candland appeared as a trim irish lass the closing chorus wa a medley of college songs entitled on the campus which had bad one of the high school class clas yells woven into it the second part of the program was a musical skit entitled quixotic quakers which was prettily rendered by flora candland mida dastrup Dai marvel blomquist elva johnson grace Neils cn von maud and myrtle lillie nielsen and madge arnold the piece was a satire on modern quakerism and the love the girls ha have hae e for music and men it was a clean skit and splendidly given by the girls who had labored on it just a week the whole entertainment was a success although the patronage was not as good as it should have been |
