Show former ormer prominent resident dies funeral services held here sunday for james al peterson funeral services were held sunday afternoon in the sevier stake tabernacle for james morten pet erson er son a well known L D S church worker and former prominent richfield banker mayor and city councilman who died friday in salt lake mr peterson had been a resident of richfield until he was called to preside over the texas mission in 1935 speaking at the services stephen L richards of the L D S council of twelve apostles les conveyed expressions pres of love and sympathy from president heber J grant and other general church authorities he made the statement his passing has brought to the fore the high esteem in which he has long been held I 1 think I 1 have scarcely ever seen what seems to me evidence of a more sincere character of esteem and respect of people than I 1 witness in this very large assemblage of his friends on this hot and sultry afternoon it is a beautiful thing to see such a demonstration of communal feeling toward this family on such an occasion the audience filled the spacious auditorium and most of the gallery apostle richards recalled his association and that of other general authorities with the peterson family on visits to richfield at the time president peterson was in the stake presidency his service as president of the texas mission and later as a counselor to president R D young in the manti temple c his love of education lus his quality of friendship he spoke of the I 1 success he had attained in the business I 1 world of his presidency of the state bankers association and athe the honor that came in his being i mentioned for governor of the i state referring to the circumstances under which the peterson tank bank closed during the depression he said 1 I knew him well I 1 he was sympathetic morel more I 1 than people realized perhaps of the misfortune which befell his associates in a business way I 1 know his heart was touched for any who lost seemingly see minely upon his account and I 1 know that throughout his troubles he was a man that he commanded respect and esteem of those who best knew him and his circumstances it fills my heart with gratitude today to see his neighbors and old friends and associates socia tes bear witness of the fact which I 1 have just sta stated president E W poulson of the sevier stake presided at the services the invocation was offered iby bishop braithwaite Bral thwaite of manti A quartet composed of mrs L A poulson mrs otto L anderson mrs vern blomquist mrs stanley johnson A W rowley howard mendenhall clarence littlewood and spencer ohlin with miss melba cope at the piano sang sometime somewhere oh my father and my imy prayer A solo face to face was sung by mrs jj A poulson and carvel mattsson played an organ selection the lost chord the organ prelude and postlude were played by mr mattsson Matt saon speakers besides apostle richards were president R n D young who spoke of president petersons service as his counselor in the sevier stake presidency for 24 years and later as his counselor in the manti mant temple wm bunker who expressed the appreciation of workers in the mantl manti temple and of manti people attending the services and president poulson all of the speakers re berred with respect to the wife and jamily family of president peterson the closing prayer was by bishop hanmer E peterson of the richfield fourth ward dr T R gle of the sevier stake presidency dedicated the grave interment being in the richfield cemetery ordinance workers from tho the manti temple acted as pallbearers pall bearers relief society members carried the many beautiful floral tributes mr peterson was born in richfield july 12 1880 he ser served in the scandinavian mission from 1900 to 1903 he was a member of the sevier stake 11 1 I A board first counselor in the stake presidency under president R D young appointed president of the texas mission in 1935 and appointed second counselor in the manti temple presidency in 1937 a position which he be held at the time of his death he had served in various church and civic capacities including service as mayor and in the city council mr peterson had been afflicted with a heart ailment the last four years and had been in retirement in salt lake most of the time since april he is survived by his wife lou isiola icinia heppler peterson whom he married in 1903 two sons james hf peterson III hr of ogdan chaun smoot peterson salt lake daus daughters aters mrs madge bailit bailif boise idaho mr una salt lake Ms mrs M s tuana junna P Pr paton ann tremonton Tre monton mrs leah anderson salt lake mrs airs anna lou brooks st geors george c miss mary deane pet erson salt lake miss son sav salt lake a half brother Lawron cp person Pc of ricefield Rich fjeld a T b 11 sister aister mrs C J sumner salt lake and five grandchildren |
