Show farmers warned against using seed david P F smith state commissioner of agriculture is much concerned over the large amount of alfalfa seed that is being imported nto into utah this year from states that have a much milder clim climate ate than utah many experiments have bee been n made using alfalfa seed from v various an sources in an effort to d determine which strain will give best results the results of these experiments peri ments have shown conclusively that alfalfa does best when the seed is from a similar region to the one where it is to be grown past experience with ed seed has been that it will not long survive our winters after a year or two the stand is reduced to the point that it will not produce a profitable crop sometimes this reduction in stand is blamed on bacterial wilt when in reality it is winter killing due to warm climate seed the te law of the state of utah provides that all agricultural seed imported into utah from another state shall be plainly labeled to show the state of origin farmers should watch for this information on all lots of alfalfa seed or other farm seed offered for sale |
