Show T GIVES PRAISE TO GROVER CAMP work progresses Progress res on difficult boulder mountain road building project the commanding officer of of camp F 19 grover utah is to be congratulated for the high efficiency fici licie ency ncy of the men stated mr larson inspector from the ogden headquarters of the forestry department part ment mr larson called at the grover camp monday of the many camps I 1 have visited the grover camp is one of the best he added due to the rough rocky terrain to be traversed around the rim of boulder mountain the camp road building project is probably the most difficult in the district though the men are handicapped by the lack of sufficient road building machinery they are making remarkable progress I 1 am impressed by the excellent spirit of the men and by their desire to carry their project to a successful conclusion cl captain john I 1 L autrey signal corps is camp commander captain harvey F hendrickson 1 med crops is camp commander cap general hospital san francisco is camp surgeon chaplain theo E curtis jr captain is camp chaplain and 2nd and bortone E townes ath infantry is camp adjutant the superintendent of the road building project is parley E jensen of ogden utah the completion of the highway will open up the heretofore almost boulder country a beautiful oasis in an impassible desert of sand scrub cedar deep washes and high cliffs easy access to the fishing and deer and cougar hunting on boulder mountain a sportsmans sports mans paradise will be provided by the new road it will traverse some of the most beautiful of utah scenery sergeant robert mcclure C A C camp mess sergeant believes that the efficiency of the C C C depends on the way the men are fed and according to visitors has one of the outstanding messes of the district sergeant serg an officer during the world war was vas prior to coming to camp grover instructor of mess sergeants at fort monroe va he is assisted by henry J of ogden utah camp steward orin clawson and john R hancock are first cooks bert hunter and herman ash second cooks and harlow mitchell virgil P swenson and T R snyder student acol cooks the men have an abundance of fresh milk and green vegetables fried chicken dinners are not uncommon cornmon Forn mon last sunday afternoon ice cream was added to the dinner menu twenty five large water melons were sliced for supper wednesday evening the members of the camp dispose of pounds of bread in four meals the mess me ss sergeant and his assistants feel they will soon be well qualified in the art of perpetual motion acquired in their attempt to appease the ravenous appetites of nearly workers the well cooked well balanced camp fare is adding considerable weight to the men they particularly appreciate the willingness of the mess sergeant to put up lunches for them when they go on weekend week end fishing trips or visit nearby towns to play ball for the entertainment and relaxation of the camp personnel an extensive leisure time program is carried out under the direction of the camp commander athletics are stressed under the able coaching of lieutenant townes camp athletic officer the camp has won three of the four league games it has played during august Augi the team is entered in the wayne county league and plays one game each week boxing and wrestling bouts are held every wednesday evening at the camp arena horseshoe pitching and volleyball volley ball are also popular with the men A combined entertainment en and camp church service is conducted each monday evening by the chaplain the camp entertainers are featured on the program and comprise a well trained chorus of 26 voices directed by bert thompson a five piece orchestra under 4 the direction di of urban stewart stew art a musical saw player two readers dick and vern parry and a vocal soloist dave hughes former radio singer binger the grover entertainers recently gave a performance at the fish fiah lake C C C camp they also were guests at inn at fish lake where they rendered a program during the dance intermission the grover camp in common with all other C C cf camps received a communication from president roosevelt asking the men to make a conscientious effort to obtain regular employment A large number of them will take advantage of the coming day holiday to comply with the request and will hunt for over the weekend though and contented with camp life men realize the C C C move is an emergency measure and anxious to take their places in ranks of civilian employment |
