Show N monthly livestock L letter e ua by J A mani mcnaughton aughton general manager los angeles union stock yards company october 1 1927 the general cattle situation throughout the country is fulfilling credic easing up of the situation during the movement of grass gras s cattle the foreign element of dual mar methods in california usually brings about an uneasy feeling on the market which proves costly to the industry in the state one of the principal evils of this uneconomic practice is the holding of range cattle after f ter i they are ready to move with consequent loss to be absorbed at the end of the season by the producer through the creation of an oversupply of common kinds and a shortage of the right quality another feature in this direct shipping is that prices in tho the country are arc always based to a large extent upon values set at the open macket which in reality is a yardstick by which livestock values are measured it natum naturally lly follows that when the common grades come to market the price levels mahich are arc quoted are deceptive anti and country prices for the better grades of cattle naturally reflect this another element which has entered the trade this fall which has not been experienced in the past several se varal years is the turning to the country by many packers to secure supplies of cattle direct through the fear of xa impend eions of continued and stability in all branches branch eq AI aa is usually the case at this season of the year locally the end of the marketing of grass cattle brings almut about an ing shortage of supplies this is is virtually a repetition of what hm haa happened in the purchasing of hogs throughout the country as the natural tendency on the part of has always been when they felts felb that a shortage was eminent to take purchasing activities as near the source of supply as possible the wisdom of this policy is is open to debate of course as the theory theary would be that birthe supplies were a af lowed to move through their natural channels at the open markets the buyers would all have an equal opportunity to purchase their requirements attrice at price levels governed by supply Y and demand and the producer on alil other hand would receive the benefit of competition for his product ay as against selling at prices dictated by a buyer calling at the ranch the producer has suffered to some extent in the past few weeks gfa glib the above situation as through direct buying activities for a period certain classes of cattle opre were not available orr the market and when cheze cla classes ze z were brought to the market arket they met with the situation that many packer sr sf lots were full of direct ship shipment menU thus removing their buying power powen from the open market for this reas rea son temporarily prices were dedreu sed below prices at which direct shimp merits ments were auzelia purchased sed thus penalizing ing the producer and on the otaker hand through the turning of beef into the trade channels at the prices bf edw the levels which conditions would ijjas 1 tiby the packing industry sun brellos ses through having to market their higher priced direct cattle in c competition with the lower priced off hangs during the period ment mention ionNI el tle tc supply at the open market in Is ioa oa 03 an geles ha haa been less every week than t i the volume required to meet local packer requirements this proves the fact that the situation could not be attributed to the visible supply upon the open market but rather to the invisible supply arriving direct to pack era eis this is well illustrated during the movement of feed lot cattle from december to may each year when concentrated cent rated buying power at the market and well gauged supplies T properly coordinated with tire the demand result in the minimum of fluctuation fr price I 1 i levels it can readily be seen from this thi afia from an econom economic de standpoint direct purchases in the past few weeks N have resulted in both the producer and uie the packer sustaining financial losses which could easily have been avoided had the entire supply of cattle been permitted to move through its natural channels at the open markets on the pacific coast where the natural laws of supply and demand are permitted to function in in an unhampered marmer manner this situation of course Is 1 righting itself and as soon as aa the direct shipments are out of the way the i trade win will to normal and every indication points to a 3 continued strong
