highly respected citizens death claimed one of Rich fields most illustrious citizens last 1 monday morning at an early hour when the dark angel gathered dr henry kennedy neill ancill the doctors demise was not unexpected as lie he had been falling failing rapidly since his return from salt lake when lie he knew that his malady cancer was incurable thus I 1 passes one of the most worthy citizens a man whose life has touched the lives of more people than probably any other man in this city he was the pioneer physician of this district and his bis healing art and cheerful spirit chased from many a home the grim reaper and when death would come the physician was lost in the human kindness and gentleness with which lie he ministered to the bereaved his was the hand to usher new life into the homes of the people and his the hand to close the eyes of departing ones and his the soul to give comfort to the distressed dr H K neill more nearly represented the sterling rugged character of the sturdy scotch doctor of mc larens larene scotch story the bonnie brier bush than any person within the writers ken and like that grand old doctor his charities and helpfulness were hidden behind a bluff heartiness that were but a thin veil to those who know knew him best dr henry K X neill was born in dundee scotland on june 15 1856 his father was a weaver and ilk like c many other scotch boys dr boyhood was spent in poverty and obscurity As he grew older he de to become a druggist and added to the education received in the public schools of scotland har hari I study in his spare time so that he qualified himself to enter one of the noted institutions of learning at edinburg scotland he graduated as a pharmacist and then launched out tor for the greater goal of the doctor and eventually won the coveted prize of ill D he was then nearly 30 years of age and in 1887 he came to utah to visit his sister mrs james boyter at deaver beaver he had no intention of staying in this country but deaver beaver in those days needed a physician and shortly after his arrival a a boy in the neighborhood met with an accident and had a leg broken dr neill was called to attend him and that and a few other urgent cases of illness determined his career as a utah physician after two years practise in beaver he was induced by some friends to come to richfield and lie he has been a ing 1119 physician here until a few months prior to his death when ill health compelled him to give up his practise ho he was a gleam or of sunshine to every houle home he entered in ili the capacity of physician ile he had in ili addition to the necessary skill the true physicians patience and comforting spirit hundreds can testify to the comfort and assurance his presence was in the bick chamber with his opportune tig in the early days he should heave been a wealthy man but his hia charities and kindness led him to give service tree free and his charges were always but a tithe of the service suffering humanity shortly after his arrival in richfield he met a richfield girl marla maria peterson daughter of mr and mrs andreas peterson and on july 20 I 1 1890 they were married he is survived by his wife wife two sons henry K and glen and two daughters bessie and annie he also leves leaves one brother and two sisters in fit scotland a sister mrs james boyter of milford utah the latter was at his bedside for a week before the doctor died but was herself taken ill III ind was unable to be present at the funeral services on wednesday afternoon the second ward chapel was filled to capacity by the friends of dr neill when funeral services were held under the direction of bishop dr neill was not a member of any church nor lid did he subscribe to any creed but his friends were numbered among the cormons mormons Mor mons presbyter ians fans methodists and non believers and all held him in high esteem A quartette under the direction of G al jones rendered appropriate Til music lisle told nt n their hist acquaintance and how he had induced dr neill to settle in richfield he paid a high tribute to the mormon people tor for their broadminded ness in opening their place of worship for the obsequies of decedent who was not a member of any faith he also told of the doctors faith in a supreme being and a life hereafter he enunciated some rather startling beliefs that lie he and the doer held in common beliefs of an evolutionary nature that no one could take exception to as they were personal and rather broad A J ashman gave a sketch of the early life of decedent and his struggle tor for an education paid high tribute to the doctor for his exemplar and high character and drew the splendid lesson of the strong man rising from obscurity and becoming a s shining billing light in the healing art and a man of great charity and kindness because of his strength of character dr gledhill and mrs heppler added their tributes to the splendid character of dr neill the former had lived at his home as a boy and the latter had bad known him as a physician and a neighbor the tributes of respect paid by the speakers the music the large audience and the mute testimony of the floral gifts must have been consoling to the bereaved family 2 interment was in the city cemetery and a long cortege followed the casket to its last resting place |
