Show Heroes of the America In response to popular demand. Captain George Fried of the linev America, whose thrilling rescue of the sailors of the Italian steamer, Florida, gripped the imagination of the world, will make a tour of principal cities to tell of heroic exploits of the seamen under his command. And while receiving the plaudits of his fellow countrymen and a message of gratitude from the King of Italy, as well as unstinted praise from other nations, Captain Fried modestly gives credit for the America's almost unprecedented unpre-cedented feat to Chief Officer Manning . and his brave companions of the life- ! boat's crew. Captain Preld's masterly seamanship seaman-ship and unerring Judgement, coupled with the efficiency and devotion of : his radiomen and others under his com mand, brought the America to the scene of the rescue, but after all it was the sheer grit and skill of the lifeboat crew that made possible one of the most difficult rescues in the annals of the sea a rescue 100 per cent perfeci, because not a man was lost from either eith-er vessel. So here we may set down the names of the heroic eight who braved the horrors of darkness and a raging sea to save their fellowmen: Chief Officer Manning, Boatswain's Mate Wilson, Masters-at-Arms Walleck and Talts, Seamen Harrabin, Bracco, Kellam and Trittan. Truly a distinguished roll of honor. |
