Show EXPENDITURES WILL P.E liELOW ESTIMATES I A feeling of rebel '.v:is experienced i throughout ihe country at the stale- ment of Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo in Baltimore before the In- 4 esunent Bankers' Association on No- p vember 14. that the actual expendi- tures of some of the departments ol J Joverninent were much less than the estimates the departments submitted j? in July last, and that the task 01 g providing for the expenses of the 9 Government for the fiscal year is not j egarded by the Treasury Depart- i ment as one which will in any way f train the capacity of the resources j of the United States. r The Secretary said in part: i "Vague and unfounded apprehen- j sions seem to exist in the public mind as to the extent of the financial re- : quirements of the United States dur- ! ing the current fiscal year. It may be ' helpful to the country to know that these requirements have been greatly great-ly exaggerated, and that in the judgment judg-ment of the Secretary of the Treasury Treas-ury there is no reason whatever for apprehension on this score. This opinion is based upon the latest estimates es-timates of our financial needs. "The splendid success of the Second Sec-ond Liberty Loan shows that the people peo-ple are fully determined to support he war and are prepared to make such sacrifices of luxuries, pleasures, comforts, and conveniences as may be necessary." The Secretary explained that his optimistic statement was based upon ctual figures in hand. |
