Declaration Made That Had Swedish Government Had Slightest Idea of Nature Na-ture of Dispatches They Would Not Have Been Transmitted. Stockholm, Sweden. Realizing the seriousness of the situation created by the recent disclosures at Washington regarding the transmission of German dispatches, Sweden expects to take all steps possible to "put matters right, Foreign Minister Lindman declared Saturday during an informal talk. All transmission of German dispatches dispatch-es had been stopped, he said, and Germany Ger-many had been asked for an explanation explana-tion of the abuse of the privilege formerly for-merly extended. In the course of his discussion of the affair, Admiral Lindman brought out the following points : Affair Taken Seriously. First That the Swedish government was not, as alleged in certain quarters, quar-ters, taking the affair lightly, but on the contrary, realized fully the serious aspect of the situation and intended to do everything possible to settle the problem. Second That transmission of dispatches dis-patches on behalf of Germany had been stopped absolutely from the moment mo-ment when the disclosures were brought to the foreign minister's attention, at-tention, and would tinder no circumstances circum-stances be resumed. Third That had the Swedish government gov-ernment had the slightest Idea of the nature of the dispatches which the German government was transmitting, the messages would not have been transmitted. Fourth That strong representations representa-tions had been addressed to the German Ger-man government on the abuse made of this practice, accompanied by a request re-quest for explanation, to which, however, how-ever, no reply had yet been received. Admiral Lindman, during the entire conversation, seemed imbued with the desire to see the situation cleared tip fully and completely on a basis satisfactory satis-factory to the United States ami Sweden Swe-den and in a way to permit the continuance con-tinuance of the most friendly, cordial relations with the American government govern-ment and people. |
