Show Development Work of the Fairview M. I. A. Mutual Improvement, our given name. Mutual Improvement, our present motto. Mutual Improvement, our pail record. JXCutual Improvement, our future plan. We are for building and improving improv-ing our home town by making more fertile, the fields and by cultivating the society. For if indeed men shall have a home, they must build it themselves. As a nest made by one bird is not likely to suit the delicate choice of another so the construction work of one man or class of men is not likely to reflect the ideals, or to satisfy the heart of others. And even if we could find a dwelling dwell-ing spot made to our order we would lose much by accepting it. Well has it been said that "as we sow, soshall we reap," but 'tis the sowing more than reaping that makes us what we are. We may profitably sow for another to reap, but for any length of time we cannot profitably reap what another has sown. So we are glad to live here where opportunity for sowing is freely given; giv-en; where we have the privilege of making the comforts we seek. The home is his, who evolves it and works with it, as the child is hers, who nurses it, and cares for it. And that which is builded invariably helps to build its builder. Then inasmuch as fortune has placed us on these rocks and in this weather lets take hold and make here a "Home Sweet Home," and let our work of improvement be our education; educa-tion; let the work which makes us and the play which refreshes us be our tutor. The Fairview M. I. A. is already realizing the practice ot that idea. During the last six months it has presented to the town four dancing parties, two theatres, one grand concert, con-cert, and a bazar, with a net income of about $350.00. This money has been used to support a free public library, made two payments on a new piano, helped buy an amusement hall and also to assist in building the hew L. D. S. chapel. But, the dollars turned to public benefits by M. I. A. entertainments is only a part of the value they represent. rep-resent. The effort of planning and arranging for original features in every presentation of any kind is an experience of worth to the community. com-munity. It tends to build actors not spectators. And it is hoped the organization or-ganization will continue its work. If it will, let it hire first class coaches to aid in every department of its activities. ac-tivities. Like all men, we dream dreams and see visions and the difference between be-tween us and our superiors is that we have not yet learned to interpert our dreams and visions into realities. Then let us spend more time working work-ing with ourselves and our immediate immedi-ate surroundings and less time in passively gazing upon the works of others. |
