Show Efficiency of the Fire Department Mount Pleasant could well afford to maintain a fire department depart-ment trained in the art of distinguishing dis-tinguishing fires. So much time is lost whenever the department de-partment is called upon to render ren-der efficient service that dollars worth of property is sometimes destroyed by fire before the department de-partment is able to get to the place where the fire is located. A few minutes time of effective work at the beginning of a fire will very often save hundreds of dollars worth of property. Had there been a well equipped equip-ped fire department in the city at the time of the recent fire which broke out at the home of P. M. McArthur, little damage would have been done. The men were all willing to do the best they could, but under the present conditions there seems to be to much delay in getting teams and assistance to get 1 he fire hose at the place desised. A town like Mount Pleasant should be equipped with some of the best fiae distinguishing apperatus to insure the safety of property in the city. Special Spec-ial training in the department would be a great benefit in the efficiency of the service. It is time for the City Council Coun-cil to take up this very important import-ant matter. All thu necessary equipment for a good fire department de-partment should be secured and a force of men organaized under one captain in order to work in harmony whenever the occasion demands. It would be well for the city to' pay the firemen a sufficient salary to encourage them to take special training at least once a week in order to insure the safety of public property as well as the homes of the citizens. citi-zens. Signals should be established estab-lished by the department so that people would know where the fire was located when the alarm was given. It would, also al-so be well to have these signals or taps of the fire bell printed and posted up in public places so that the people could get thoroughly acq . ainted with them. This would avoid consternation con-sternation whenever the alarm is given and people would know at once where the fire was raging. |
