Show Told by Sir E. Poynter. Sir Edward Poynter, P. R. A., tellB many good stories in an interview in the Mornidg Post. My election as president of the Royal academy (he says) came more or less as a Burprise. The first intimation inti-mation I had of it was from old Sidney Sid-ney Cooper, who was always very friendly to me. He was as deaf as a post, and always talked, as some deaf people do, at the top of his voice. During the time when it was evident, from poor Millais's terrible state, that there must soon be another election to the presidency, the varnishing days came round, when members are present pres-ent in full force, and Cooper came up to me and Eaid, in a voice which could be heard by every one in the room: "This is quite between ourselves, you know, but you are going to be the new president." |
