Show NINETEEN PERISH IN HOSPITAL FIRE FIVE CHILDREN, EIGHT WOMEN AND SIX MEN TRAPPED IN BURNING BUILDING. Those Who Perished Were Entombed by Tons of Debris. Nuns Risked Lives to Save Children En-Trapped En-Trapped by Flames. Farnham, Quebec. Nineteen persons per-sons five children, eight women and six men lost their lives in the fire which destroyed St. Elizabeth hospital hos-pital early Thursday. There were 218 persons in the hospital, of whom 113 were children, 36 aged women and the others servants and assistants to the Grey nuns. One reason for the difficulty in definitely defi-nitely establishing the loss of life, it was said, was that the majority of the inmates of the hospital were without with-out relatives or friends. Those who perished are believed to have been entombed en-tombed by tons of debris. An investigation as to the cause of the fire disclosed that a blaze started in a chimney of the hospital Tuesday night. It is the theory of the authorities authori-ties that this smouldered and broks out again. Many of the nuns, it was said, risked risk-ed their lives in efforts to save patients pa-tients and children entrapped In the hospital. Fanned by a strong breeze, the flames, unchecked by the small jets of water the firemen were abla to throw on them, swept through tha building with lightning speed, cutting off tho inmates in the various departments. |
