Representatives ol the S0.00O conductors and trainmen ol eastern railways, who have voted tc strike for higher wages, and managing manag-ing oi fleers of railroads, agreed at the White House on Monday to submit sub-mit their differences to arbitration under the provisions of the Newlands- . Clayton, act, which President Wilson and congressional leaders promised to make a law at once. In the meantime, no strike will be declared, officials of the employees' brotherhoods agreeing to an armistice. This victory for arbitration ar-bitration over the strike was the result re-sult of a two-hour conference at the White House between President Wilson Wil-son and congressional leaders, both Republicans and Democrats; the presidents pres-idents and managers of the roads, ana representatives of the brotherhoods of trainmen and conductors. The agree- -ment not only averted, temporarily at least, the strike .which threatened to tie up railroad traffic generally in the east, but smoothed out differences ot opinion that had arisen in both houses as to the composition of the board of mediation a-ud provided a permanent commission to deal with railroad disputes. |
