Show ' UTAH SHOULD BE CAREFUL Enough new boards and commissions commis-sions are proposed at the coming session ses-sion of the legislature to require hundreds of thousands of dollars additional ad-ditional tax1 money. Utah has been fortunate in the past in having fewer of these commissions com-missions than her neighboring Pasiflc Coast states. California, Oregon and Washington Washing-ton are advertised the United States ever as having the highest taxes of any states in the Union. Their taxes are more than double and one of the states is nearly treble the general average for the United States and in making the average the high rate of these three states is included. Why are their taxes so high? Simply because they- have all the burdensome expense of government caused by innumerable boards and commissions, city, county and state, and only a limited population to pay the bill. Much drastic legislation has been passed in these states to regulate industries in-dustries which had barely got a foothold. foot-hold. High taxes and such policies have greatly retarded the investment of capital. The states have had the fun of passing the laws and supporting boards and commissions but they have had to pay the bill. The big thing the politicians failed to pass was a bill requiring capital tc invest and as a matter of fact, that was the one bill they could not pass; they could regulate the investor cut of business and drive him away with high taxes and drastic legislation legisla-tion but they could not make him put his money where conditions were unattractive. un-attractive. Now the tide has turned and th.o last two elections the people have voted down every radical measure on (he ballot and the main fight is to cut down overhead and taxes, eliminate elim-inate unnecessary commissions and pass no more industry killing legislation. legis-lation. In fact they are'going farther and -asking the repeal of freak laws now on the statute books. Before it is too late Utah should take warning from her sister state pnd not pass legislation that will m check the golden stream now pouring into the state. Everything within reason must be done to encourage our industrial development de-velopment and nothing should be . done to discourage it. ; One investor employing fifty men j maans much more to the state than a dozen new office holders. Utah can afford to go slow and profit by the experience of others. ITU |
