Horticulture is a branch of industry which is yearly growing in importance. The value of fruit products as a staple article of food is constantly becoming more universally recognized, with the result that capital and labor expended in this direction are steadily proving prov-ing mora profitable. That meat and grain must vie with the best fruits in the markets of the world more and more strenuously every day is a fore gone conclusion. Like man himself, fruit trees have a capacity for an almost limitless development de-velopment and improvement. They can be civilized and demonstrated just as a child to tender nurture and kind treatment. An astonishing advance has already been made in the task of evolving the perfect fruit tree, and anyone whe contemplates undertaking fruit growing grow-ing would do well to recognize this fact from the start. A great many fruit growers, and especially beginners, begin-ners, fall into the error of assuming that care and cultivation are the secret se-cret charms which can induce almost any tree to bear heavily. Never was there a greater mistake made, as such are sure to learn as the lesson of years of pains and labor unprofit-ably unprofit-ably expended. The quality of the stock itself is the factor which determines deter-mines wholly what the future result shall be. Professional stockmen do not accomplish ac-complish their ends by continued attention at-tention to any one tree, but by selecting select-ing the best from among thousands of its offspring, and developing that. Budding and grafting and propagating the best over and over again, skillfully, skill-fully, on scientific principles, are the stepping stones by which they accomplish ac-complish their advance. But the amateur ama-teur should not attempt it. He should leave the process to them, and look to them for the proper Btock to begin with. After a start with the right and most approved nursery stock, attention atten-tion and cultivation will speedily bring the results so much desired. The winning of Buccess becomes an easy task then, though to others it may seem inexplicable. This is the one, indispensable sine-qua-non of accomplishment accom-plishment in fruit growing, for which there is no substitute, and in place of which no makeshift will do. |
